“Very Pleased with this Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2010

Stayed at The Swanston Grand Mecure for 5 nights during the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Location is brilliant, right in the heart of the city and this meant we were able to walk to all the theatres. Cab rank and trams are also right outside the front door. All staff we met were fine, and check in and check out were efficient.

Room and bathroom were very clean and serviced each day by housekeeping. Room service meals were excellent and quickly delivered. I was able to secure a very good internet rate by booking direct with the hotel, and I considered it very good value for money for an inner city hotel.

I am very happy to recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a reasonably priced good quality hotel. Especially good for families as the rooms have a microwave, toaster and coffee making facilities. Lots of eateries nearby and 7 day marts for supplies. This hotel will be my first choice again for our next trip to Melbourne.

Spent 4 nights at the swanston hotel, grand mercure. Fabulous location, everything is open and happening at night so no worries for a late arrival. Chinatown and 7-11 are across the road, Haigh's chocolate is in the foyer, 3 Sushi restaurants within a block and heaps of tram lines in the area. The room was slightly dated, with 3 water sprinklers staring at me from the ceiling as i lied in bed. But clean throughout. Bed and pillows were comfy and plasma TV was big and able to swivel. I asked for a quieter room (higher floors) and was granted a room on 11th floor with minimal noise (except saturday when I could still hear a busker singing into the microphone on the street), but overall sleep quality was good. Attentive reception staff. Would definitely stay there again.

have stayed here before and reminded again of how easy it is to do so - location is brilliant with a friendly staff and a concerned GM who assisted me personally with some travel difficulties - would definitely stay again!

The location of this hotel is ideal for walking around the city and has front lobby access to the trams/taxis etc. The people working at the tourist desk are great - really helpful informative and friendly. The rooms themselves are a bit tired and dated but clean throughout. We had a room with 2 double beds as we were a family of four. The outside noise on a weekend can be heard at times throughout the night as you are right in city centre but is not overly worrying just something to be aware of if you are a light sleeper! We really loved the location but would have preferred the option of an extra room as travelling with kids.

I booked the hotel through wotif.com - so I did get a great room rate - $133 per night. My main complaint was that I had asked for a room not near the elevator as my partner has trouble sleeping with noise - elevator noise being particularly bothersome to him. We were booked into a room directly beside the elevator. In addition, the room was not very clean & cigarette smoke was able to waft through the connecting door to our room (even though we were on a non-smoking floor). We complained to the service desk twice that someone was smoking in one of the rooms next to us - they said they would investigate it, however the smoking continued for our entire stay (4 days). When I got home, all my clothes and my suitcases stunk of smoke. Not a pleasant experience. However, the location of the hotel is ideal for walking around the city and access to the trams/taxis, etc. We did use roomservice as well & the food was excellent.

We stayed for four nights. The staff were efficient, courteous and friendly. The room was basic but roomy enough and clean, with some noise from plumbing but nothing to deter one from staying again. The restaurant for dinner was fine, with good quality servings. One night the table service was slow but that was due to a large tour group. Breakfast is good at both restaurants with the top floor a bit more expensive and would suit business people. The location is great being right next to China Town and near to the Bourke St Mall. No views from our room unless you like old roofs and aircon plants.
