“Not the greatest of locations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2009

though location is good rooms are very small - i had booked a standard room but was upgraded to suite for free cos i was on my honeymoon. The size of the suite was as good as that of a standard room in other hotels. The entrance lobby also was very claustrophobic. Its better to book a room at teh adjoining hotel - Grand Mercure wellcome and save some money.

The only positives about this place was its location.

I have just stayed 4 nights at the Swanston Hotel Grand Mercure. The location is unbeatable. From the main entrance you walk out into all the shops and department stores. Lots of cafes are also on your doorstep. Tram just out the front too. Just a ten minute walk to Vic markets, and lots of other attractions. Would not say its 4 1/2 star..more like 3.5 or 4 star. Rooms are spacious but basic. Old tv..but didnt really use it anyway. Great concierge...very helpful . Breakfast was fresh and plentiful. Definitely recommended but dont be fooled by the 4.5 star rating.

Scruffy room, noise from the lift and out-of-control airconditioning kept us awake all night. Sagging bed and pillows filled with what felt like rocks. The door to our room looked like the Australian Security Intelligence Agency had conducted a raid the night before. The tv would not have looked out of place on a suburban nature strip... We only stayed because we had a gift certificate which the hotel would only redeem for accomodation, which seemed unfair.

I am writing my review on the last night of my stay.

As a caveat, I am paying an inflated rate because of the Melbourne Grand Prix, so that does not make me very pleased.

Anyhow, about the hotel, it is in a good location.

However, that's about all that is going for this place. We were not impressed with:

- the tired furnishings and fittings
- the not-so-there service (how about a smile at least?)
- the noises from the lift (you had better make sure your room is not next to the lift!)
- the room service food is so-so only
- the high internet charges. AUD 0.50 per minute, at a maximum of AUD 24 per day. However, we were grateful for the decent connection.

We stayed at the Grand Mercure Swanston Hotel for 2 nights, and I chose the hotel specifically for its location as we were going to be in Melbourne for the boxing day sales and cricket at the MCG. The hotel is fantastically located if you want to be near all of the big name shops, theatres etc and the location is definitely the hotel's best feature.

The positives: the location, the indoor swimming pool on level 15 with a gorgeous view over the city. Fantastic congierce desk - very helpful and eager to assist with directions and arranging airport transfers etc. Room was comfortable size, bed comfortable. Also, for chocoholics, there is a Haigh's chocolate shop in the hotel foyer! Several trams run past the hotel and most points of interest are within walking distance.

The not-so-positives: room needed some maintenance - paint was chipping in some corners, some places in the room were plastered over without finishing off the repair job with some paint, shower had some mould in corners. Didn't expect this lack of maintenance from a four star hotel. Curtains let through some light so we were woken by light coming through the top part of the curtains. Breakfast was not very good - the baked beans were really hard and chewy, there was only 1 croissant left when we arrived, the eggs are really, really runny. We had to wait several minutes before we could attract a waiter's attention to get coffee.

Overall, we had a good and comfortable stay and would probably stay here again if we can get a good deal on price, as the location is fantastic. However, as there are a number of other hotels close by, I feel that the hotel will need to lift its game a bit.

  • Liked — The location.
  • Disliked — The lack of attention to maintenance in the room and the hotel breakfast.

Booked this hotel last minute, had seen it was a 4 - 4 and half star hotel so thought would be quite nice.

Room was small and shower had no pressure at all. Lifts were broken so had to take the service lift. No signage anywhere that the lifts were broken even though the staff knew.

I travelled for business in Melbourne and was recommended this hotel as it was close to the customer. It has a fantastic location on Swanston which is a great place for a holiday. I really enjoyed the area, lifestyle, people, location, food and would go back to Melbourne again for holiday.

I am afraid to say I would not stay in the "Grand" Mercury Swanston. It clearly used to be the Welcome Hotel (a lower grade of the parent Accors chain) and has been given a lick of paint and re-titled and priced. The rooms have little sound deadening between them and the breakfast is average at best.

There is nothing bad about the hotel and if you stay there you will likely enjoy it but you will not feel like you are staying in "Grand" surroundings. A 1980's fishbowl style TV with all of 10 channels sums it up perfectly. The bathroom is clean, the beds are fine and the fittings all work.

It needs to be cheaper or it needs a real overhaul to make it a "Grand" hotel. The staff are friendly and work well for the customers so I do not believe it reflects on them, just the age of the building.

Maybe someone listed it for architectural protection and forgot to tell them this did not include the interior and fittings....

The surrounding shopping, eating and sight seeing is well worth it and if you can get a good price then you will likely enjoy it without a problem.

  • Liked — Location, people, Melbourne itself.
  • Disliked — Old, not so Grand.
