“Good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Adelphi is in a great location--Flinders Lane--which is close to the National Gallery and lots of great restaurants like Movida. It is a bit tired now, the faux Constructivist furniture never looked great and it now it's shabby. Each floor used to have a selection of works by leading Australian photographers. These have gone and the art now is really bad decor. The roof top pool was always a gimmick but the slick design of the outdoor area has gone and it's pretty tacky up there now. Breakfast service was very slow but food was good when it arrived. In December 2012 there was a lot of noise in the morning from nearby construction. Nonetheless, for Melbourne it's still an appealing hotel, particularly if there are mid-week bargains.

“Mouldy, sweaty, outdated...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

Don't bother. The receptionist ignored us when we arrived to check in, answering the phone instead. While the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was good. The room and bathroom were a great size.

Pretty much everything else was bad. Our toilet was so loud it couldn't be flushed at night. The cistern filled for about 30 mins. On the second night our room wasn't made up - as requested they kindly moved us to a second room. The air-con didn't work so the room was a humid 24 degrees all night, there are no windows that open so we didn't get much sleep. And when I opened the blinds in the morning there was mould covering the edge of the window. I have added some pics. The receptionist in the morning could barley give a sh*t. This hotel needs a total revamp, especially for the price you pay. The location is fantastic though.

DionChandler, General Manager at Adelphi Hotel, responded to this review
November 27, 2012
Good afternoon Tobias and thank you very much for your email.
I’d like to start by offering you my most sincere apologies for what you experienced on your recent stay with us.

I have just been up to both rooms (405 & 505) you stayed in.
There seemed to be a slight leak issue in the cistern of room 405’s toilet which we have managed to fix today.
I will be speaking with the Housekeeping Manager to find out why your room was not made up for you on Saturday. This is a most unusual occurrence and I cannot find any valid reason for why your room would not made up. I am glad our reception was able to help you and I will pass on your thanks to him, however this clearly should not have happened in the first place.

I did read in the diary on Monday morning that there was a complaint about the air-conditioning in room 505 not cooling. I went up to the room with the Maintenance Manager after you had checked out and when we switched it from heating to cooling, the room temperature decreased from 24 Deg down to 19 in approximately 20 minutes. I have checked it again today and it appears to be working fine. As this unit is only 6 months old, we are currently training our staff on how to assist our guests in the event there are any issues. I will keep an eye on this again though to see if there are any further issues with it.

I was shocked to see the mould build up as evidenced in your photos.
Our Housekeepers routinely check the rooms for mould and I can see this room was last treated in August 2012. I have just checked a few other rooms which were treated at the same time and cannot see anything like what has appeared in room 505 after just 3 months.
We will be treating this room again first thing again tomorrow morning along with a thorough investigation in to the other rooms.

I am aware that there are plenty of great hotels in Melbourne and this is why we listen to our guests very carefully and act on all complaints immediately. I can assure you the receptionist on check out did care very much about your complaint and she has asked me to pass on her apologies if she came accross in any other way.

I thank you again for bringing these issues to our attention and as I would sincerely like to have an opportunity to restore your confidence in the product and services we offer, if you choose to stay with us again, your next night will be with our compliments.

If you would like to book again, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

My apologies again and thanks for bringing this to my attention.

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,
Dion

“An over-priced student hostel.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Two years ago, my friend and I decided to have a girls' weekend in Melbourne - she travelled from Queensland and I from Perth, WA. The photographs of the Adelphi on the internet looked appealing and someone had told us about the unique overhanging pool so we thought we'd book it - although it was quite pricey. What a rip-off!!! The twin room had all the charm of a prison cell. It's very well for the management to bang on about the 'minimalism' of the decor - but does this also encompass tatty and cheap? Yes, clean right angles and lots of grey - but the furniture is cheap and nasty. The bathroom had no ventilation or extractor fan so steam and smells lingered - not to mention the flimsy wall provided no privacy or protection from unpleasant bathroom sounds. It was a twin room - but coffee for only one person was provided in the room. You had to pay for the bottled water - which is extraordinary considering the cost of the room. The famous pool was shabby, grubby and neglected. The staff were clueless. We had a glass of wine in the charmless (yes... yes... I know... it's minimalist) bar one evening. The first glass was served and then the barman just disappeared, never to be seen again. On Sunday morning the lift stopped functioning. Everyone trying to head downstairs on the Sunday morning had the experience of waiting and waiting for the lift - then finally realizing it was not functioning. Could the staff not have put a little sign on the lift doors on each floor? It seems an obvious courtesy. While waiting for a taxi, I watched guest after guest come to the front desk and report the lift was not working. One would imagine the staff would think of putting up a sign, just to stop every single guest reporting the same thing. As I said, clueless. So I am warning everyone: do not be deceived by the photographs on the website. This hotel is grossly over-priced and suffers from delusions of luxury. I have only just started posting reviews on Tripadvisor, which is why this report dates from 2010. But you can understand how disappointed the experience was, given I am still able to write about it with such intensity two years later.

“Poor Lighting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

Stayed at the Adelphi in Melbourne. The lighting in the bathroom was so poor my wife had to apply her makeup by "braille". I had the same experience when trying to shave. It was like someone had cut the power to the bathroom and we were having to use birthday candles. The rest of the stay was good. Clean room, comfortable bed and friendly staff.

“Pretentious but not Boutique”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

Agree with all the recent reviews below, they are all accurate and realistic. The Adelphi was hip in its day, which was the early 1990's but now it is run down. It has lost it's edge, along with the original concept. In addition to other guest's informative comments, note you will be charged $100 bond per night for room incidentals which will accumulate over your stay, that means stay 4 nights and you will carry a $400 credit card transaction for the duration until it is reversed days later. That is steep! Items were not replaced in the room, soap, long life milk, shower caps etc which was probably why I was accused of consuming BBQ Shapes despite not partaking of the mini bar. Lights not working in the black lined cupboard interiors meant challenging wardrobe and mini bar coffee experiences. Also needs a technology upgrade for the C21st. The location is good but it is poor value and not up to scratch for a boutique hotel. Lost its way!

Room Tip: Towards the rear perhaps as construction on multi storey tower starts early opposite in front of sit...
