“Good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012 via mobile

Needs a revamp. Tired... Would have been great back when it opened. Staff are friendly and helpful. Great location. Close to lots of great paces to eat although we never managed to get into chin chin. Great little coffee shop near chapter house with funky staff. Stay again ? Probably not... Too expensive for what you get although location is tops.

“Funky but great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

A small boutique hotel in Flinders Lane is a departure from traditional hotel setup. It has industrial type finishes (steel and plywood), bold colours etc but we found it a refreshing change and will happily stay there again on our next visit. The location is just off Swanston Street, a short walk to Federation Square, shops and a great selection of restaurants, and is tops for the tourist. Our room was spacious and well appointed. Free wi fi, ipod connection to the audio system.

The only downside was hearing other doors close along the corridor, but as there are only a few rooms, this was pretty minor.
Being inner city there were no views.

“No longer hip”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

Stayed at the Adelphi for one night this week, while on business. I had noticed it's innovative contemporary design for a number of years and this was a chance to check it out.

The signage of the hotel is a little too discrete for my taxi driver to find - plus the lane it's in is prone to traffic snarl-ups especially as there's a big apartment complex under construction across the road.

Arrived early to leave a bag and check in, before heading off to do business for the day. The staff were very helpful, looking after my luggage and checking me in with all the paperwork was no problem. I was hungry and then went into the smallish dining room and ordered bacon and eggs which arrived quickly and was tasty. I was given free internet wifi access so I could check emails. A complimentary fruit juice was also offered. The dining room was basic, as was the reception area very small. The style of this area and the rest of the building is industrial - lots of steel, glass and block coloured walls. Sort of a 1990's minimalist look.

In the evening I got my room allocation and was on level 6. The room was 606, at the end of the hallway, but with only about 8 rooms per floor not far from the lift which was large and nicely paneled in birchwood wood. On reflection I think it was the best decorated room in the building.

My room was large, had a super king bed on a flat base, a very dated and old looking custom made sofa, a large bathroom with a very cold feeling - lots of glass and unpainted metal. The design of room and bathroom was very dated, quite unfashionable now. Paintwork was dodgy all over the hotel: rooms, hallways, outside. The building feels very tired.

Thebedroom had a large flatscreen TV, wardrobes with the usual iron/board. A well equipped minibar and fridge also had the usual coffee/tea making facilities. The room has high ceilings so feels very roomy, and windows were covered in sun filters and blockouts that faced east to a building on the other side of a narrow laneway. No chance of direct sunlight coming in, but the windows were large so the room felt light and airy.

Street noise was as-expected in the middle of the city, plus the construction site across the road meant it heightened from 6am next morning. A little courtesy note and earplugs showed the hotel management were aware of the impact of these issues.

The bed and mattress was huge, but a little too lumpy for me. Linen was a good quality and pillows weren't cheap either. I had a look at the glass sided pool on the roof (L9) which features on their advertising - it was fatigued with supporting steel beams quite corroded. Unfortunately, new nearby towering buildings have robbed this roof of a lot of direct sunlight, so it's not that inviting although effort has been made with astro turf and sun chairs to made it attractive.

I didn't have breakfast there second morning. Checking out was quick and efficient, staff friendly again.

Would I stay there again?: no. The place has long lost its shine as a funky alternative to the usual hotels in the CBD. It needs a lot of maintenance, and redecorating. The rate at $210 was also way too high for what I got.

“BEWARE of the HIDDEN COSTS”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

A group of us recently stayed here and were conned by the advertising pictures. The hotel is old, lacklustre and really needs some TLC. Nothing is complimentary unlike most 4 to 5 star hotels. The water beside the bed has a tiny, tiny pricetag on it which you need a magnifying glass to see to know that you are paying $4.50 for what seems like "complimentary" water. We have stayed in many overseas hotels and water is always complimentary. Everything is run down and old. It takes forever to get your credit card deposit money back and the hotel staff have no qualms with adding things to your bill AFTER you leave. When speaking to a manager, prepare for surly and unhelpful responses with them trying to talk over the top of you. All in all, we would never stay there again nor recommend it to anyone. For the price, it is a total rip off.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

DionChandler, General Manager at Adelphi Hotel, responded to this review
October 27, 2012
Dear 62Happy_Traveller,
Thank you for staying recently at Adelphi and providing your feedback.
I am sorry you felt ripped off that we charged you for the 4 bottles of water you consumed during your stay with us (all of which had neck tags clearly indicating the price + it is listed on the minibar sheets).
We do not hide any costs at Adelphi.
Whilst there are hotels out there that do not charge for water, there are not many that do not charge anything for internet. Adelphi provides its guests with free high speed internet in all rooms and public areas, so your comment that "nothing is complimentary unlike most 4 to 5 star hotels" is not really fair.
I am not sure which Manager you spoke to, however please feel free to contact me anytime.
I appreciate your feedback and we do help to welcome you back one day soon.

Kind Regards,
Dion

“Small boutique style hotel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

I recently stayed at the Adelphi Hotel, Flinders Lane, with a friend for 3 nights. I found that staying at the Adelphi ticked a lot of boxes for a visitor to Melbourne.
1. I liked the fact that it is a small boutique style hotel.
2. Bedroom and bathroom were spacious.
3. The breakfast menu that is included in the rate was more than adequate.
3. Really great location. Walking distance to the Mall, Arts Centre, Princess Theatre, MCG, etc. Trams, trains, buses all nearby if needed.
4. At night time you did not have to go any further than Flinders Lane for great cafes and bars.
I would stay at the Adelphi again.
