“Two galleries”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

Be warned: the National Gallery of Victoria is in two parts: the Asian and European art is in the building the other side of the Yarra River. The Australian and modern painting is in Federation Square. Good collections - worth a visit.

“This place lacks class”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Having been to many large galleries in the USA and Europe I was expecting a smaller offering here. It turned out the offering was fine (if limited) and the Neo- Impressionist exhibition was very good and well done. THE THING that is really irritating and detracted from the over all experience was VERY LOUD PUBLIC BROADCAST announcements spruking tours in a voice that was not good for public speaking...best saved for shouting support at the MCG

“Fascinating Collection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

The NGVI is a great place to spend anything from an hour to a day, depending on your degree of interest - I close to a day for me, and never a dull moment. Very good mixed bag of classical and contemporary art in the collection, and some of the travelling exhibitions are just fantastic. Built in the 1960's and then re-imagined some time after that, the building is a very interesting space in it's own right and the cafes are of good quality when you need refreshments. Also check out the NGV Australia, over in Federation Square as well - it is for Australian Art only and also definitely worth a look if you have even only the remotest interest in art as it is as varied and interesting, in it's own way, as the NGVI.

“Excellent day out for the whole family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

Magnificent exhibitions througout the year. Special areas to educate and entertain children. The only down-side is the cafe downstairs - avoid at all costs as they have very poor hygiene standards.

“spare an hour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

wander in, note the falling cascade of water in the front entrance, let the staff tell you what is on and walk on - loved the Ballet and Fashion exhibition. We just did the free options this time, - the Post Impressionists did not appeal.
