“evening dining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2014

The front of house person approached us as we walked along the restaurant strip. He encouraged us to try the venue which we did, and were glad we did. We ordered duck risotto and lamb shanks. Both meals were excellent. Hot, full of flavour and very good value for money.

“Friendly staff, very average food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

As you walk done Hardware Lane past Max the maître 'd practically begs you to dine in the restaurant and does so with the lure of free drinks. I should have heard the warning bells.

I was dining with friends & we started with the arancini balls which were fine. On the recommendation of the waiter, I chose the pork belly for main. It was terrible. Not soft, succulent & falling away from the fork as you would expect but dry, tough & close to inedible. The garlic mash was like smooth, stringy plastic & the whole dish was drowned in quite a salty gravy. Needless to say there was a whole lotta food left on that plate when the waiter came to collect it.

One friend had the lamb shanks & she enjoyed them, they did look good. The other had the steak & it was just steak.

We opted for a cocktail rather than a sweet for dessert. The Cosmos tasted like medicine, perhaps missing the lime juice? The Espresso Martinis were okay.

On the whole wouldn't bother with this place again, way too many much better options close by.

Lesson learnt: if a maître 'd has to beg you to come into the restaurant, keep walking

“Tucked Away in a Lane”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

The staff at each restaurant down this lane will do anything to have you dine with them. Don't miss an opportunity to dine at Max Bar & Restaurant where the atmosphere is friendly and warm. Kids are more than welcome. Sitting out in the lane is a great way to people watch.

“Food was OK, but ordinary service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

On our last night in Melbourne we decided to go into the city to meet with friends for a nice dinner. Being a Saturday we figured that it would be pretty busy and so we went early to find somewhere nice, but not too pricey. When walking past Café Max, a guy came out and showed us the menu, which looked OK and so we decided to take a seat. We ordered a ix of pasta and pizzas, all of which were quite OK, but the service was pretty bad. After ordering our 1st round of drinks and waiting 10 minutes (we were seated right next to the bar), I grabbed a waiter and asked where our drinks were and then after another 5 minutes they finally arrived. It also took around 45 minutes to get our meals, and then after dinner we ordered coffee, but after waiting another 10 minutes, we decided to pay the bill and go elsewhere for coffee. I then had to argue with the waiter to remove the price of our coffee that still hadn't arrived, from our bill.
