“Relaxed Japanese Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

A new and relaxed large Japanese restaurant with excellent food and a huge selection of 80+ different sake, a rice-based alcoholic beverage. It is designed as a popular modern eating place, with long communal tables, four-person booths, tables for two and a mezzanine. Most of the guests early in the evening mid-week seemed to be young people, probably a reflection of the large number of apartments nearby. We chose to splurge and had the AU$90 each degustation menu, wine or sake not included, and we tried three different sake by the glass. There were no language problems. Our principal waiter happened to be an enthusiastic young Czech Australian, very knowledgeable about Japanese food and sake. The service was excellent. Ask for a booth if you want a quieter experience. The restaurant had a great buzz but would get noisy at times. Modern design with lots of hard surfaces! East Brunswick is off the beaten track for tourists but easily reached by tram from Swanston Street in the city centre. Kumo Izakaya is at 152 Lygon Street, East Brunswick, NOT in Carlton, no parking restrictions after 6 pm. on the restaurant side of the street. A short walk from the traffic light intersection of Lygon Street and Edward Street, East Brunswick. Currently open in the evening only.

“Kampi! We'll be back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2011

What fun. It can get a little loud here as everyone talks amongst the many dishes they've ordered, in true izakaya style. We order many things - the sashimi was amazing, the pork belly pie too - so good, a little touch of Aussie in Japan. Around Kumo are some great bars, Alderman, Atticus Finch and Mr Wilson, so you can pop fir an early dinner and then drinks, or drinks then a late dinner. Last orders are around 11.30pm. Some amazing food and we learnt about sake too - just from the menu! So many to choose from. It's a really casual place, but isn't cheap if you order the whole menu like we seemed to! ( :
