I have been going to the South Melbourne market for years and have witnessed it changing both in its offering and its visitors. I have also visited most other markets in Melbourne and this market is still the absolute favourite of mine.
Some of its eateries have been there for decades, such as the Dumpling place, alwaIys expect a queue while others only popped up recently, such as South American flavours (fantastic paellas) and seafood. These places on the side of the market remain open even after the market has closed generally till 7pm. The market closes at 4pm.
If you fancy to rest at a cafe between shopping for fruits and meat then there are a few cafes opposite the market as well and pub food on offer. Live music serves as entertainment around the market either in the form of buskers or in the restaurants.
Now, that was just the additional benefits of visiting the South Melbourne market. The main reason is the fresh food, the amazing and friendly potato place, the nuts shop, the numerous bakeries, high quality meat and fish (free range as well of course) and beautiful fruit and veggies.
Inside the market you can stop to get a quick massage (multiple choices), buy fresh flowers (again multiple choices), clothing, homeware, books and gifts.
Traffic is annoying on the weekends, expect to stand in queues in the car but there is plenty of covered parking on top of the market building or shopping malls also offer limited free parking just a block away.
It is easy to spend half a day at the market, taking your time in choosing food for the week and enjoying the athmosphere.
