“Perfect way to spend your weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

I have been going to the South Melbourne market for years and have witnessed it changing both in its offering and its visitors. I have also visited most other markets in Melbourne and this market is still the absolute favourite of mine.
Some of its eateries have been there for decades, such as the Dumpling place, alwaIys expect a queue while others only popped up recently, such as South American flavours (fantastic paellas) and seafood. These places on the side of the market remain open even after the market has closed generally till 7pm. The market closes at 4pm.
If you fancy to rest at a cafe between shopping for fruits and meat then there are a few cafes opposite the market as well and pub food on offer. Live music serves as entertainment around the market either in the form of buskers or in the restaurants.
Now, that was just the additional benefits of visiting the South Melbourne market. The main reason is the fresh food, the amazing and friendly potato place, the nuts shop, the numerous bakeries, high quality meat and fish (free range as well of course) and beautiful fruit and veggies.
Inside the market you can stop to get a quick massage (multiple choices), buy fresh flowers (again multiple choices), clothing, homeware, books and gifts.
Traffic is annoying on the weekends, expect to stand in queues in the car but there is plenty of covered parking on top of the market building or shopping malls also offer limited free parking just a block away.
It is easy to spend half a day at the market, taking your time in choosing food for the week and enjoying the athmosphere.

“This is how food should be bought: FRESH”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

On a recent trip interstate we went to South Melbourne Market: what a find. We just kept going back, the food was so plentiful, affordable and fresh, the atmosphere alive, and the coffee...well it is Melbourne so you'd expect the coffee to be good.
Came home yesterday and went to three different supermarkets (all known names) trying to find fresh fruit and veggies...a pretty disappointing outing, and pricy too... I guess South Melbourne Market has spoiled me.
The markets are accessible by tram, or a healthy walk from the City, so if in Melbourne, try buying some seafood, or steak or deli items, or fruit and veggies over in South Melbourne. Great eating. It's good fun too.

“Brilliant. Get out of woolies / coles and get your food here!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013 via mobile

What a find! These markets are fantastic. Great little selection of cafes nearby, amazing deli produce, something to suit everyone! Spent far too much money in 1 hr on cheese! 20 min walk from southbank and completely worth it.

“Give Queen Victoria Market a miss and come here instead...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

Having been to Queen Victoria Market a couple of times previously, I found South Melbourne Market more interesting. A much more local feel, MUCH lower prices and a great vibe. It felt more genuine and alive than Queen Victoria. If you're a foodie, try some fresh Tasmanian oysters straight over the counter at the fish & seafood stall, or some sushi, yam cha or paella, or splurge it a bit and go for some grilled seafood. There's something for everyone. And the best thing is, it won't cost you a fortune. Make sure you check out the surronding area as well. Just across the street, on Coventry Street, there are lots af interesting things to have a look at, such as "Made in Japan" a great place for buying something Japanese for your home or "Chef's Hat" that has everything you could possibly desire for your kitchen, and at reasonable prices as well. South Melbourne Market is the perfect place to go for a couple of relaxing hours on a Sunday afternoon.
