“Pricey French comfort food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

$16.50 for a smallish bowl of French onion soup is a bit steep even by Melbourne standards. To cater for modern tastes, old French classics have been "lightened up" ...still tasty but nothing special. Conveniently located on a lane (aka alley) off Flinders with a contemporary decor. A largish entry way has "outdoor" seating that alas only looks out at a brick wall opposite. Perhaps because we were having an early dinner the staff did not seem to be quite ready for service.

“Real French cuisine in OZ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

I continue to return and recommend this restaurant.
Not only for the superbe french style of cooking, but also the friendliness and good humour of the staff.
A formulae, choice of 2 courses and a drink, is available at lunchtimes.
I suggest always booking

“Looking forward to coming back !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

After reading other reviews we were lucky enough to get a table at short notice. We tried the chefs table - the chef selects 4 or 5 courses for you.We were able to let them know about any no go food or allergies and we were simply delighted with the selection. While niether of us would have selected beef tatare it was scrumptious. The wait staff were delightful and overall our evening was wonderful. We are looking forward to another evening there.Thank you French Brasserie!

“Will Return”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

First time eating at a French restaurant, it was excellent. Although it was busy, our orders were taken swiftly and our entrées arrived quite quickly. I ordered the Escargots de Bourgogne à l'ail to start, then the five course Formule du Chef for mains, where the chef designs a meal for the table which was perfect. Will definitely be going back next time I'm in Melbourne.

“A lovely night out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

Had dinner here on a Thursday night. The menu is tight, but quite well thought out.

We had charcuterie plate for entree and mains of steak and the pork belly, topped off with a creme caramel.

The charcuterie plate had a terrine, pate and a slice of soft blood pudding, surrounded by a couple of chutney dishes and some home-made bread with some cornichons thrown in for good measure. Everything was lovely - nothing particularly inspiring - but perfectly done, nonetheless.

The steak was perfectly done with a garlicky mash and a sprinkling of other vegetables. The pork belly was also very good, if a bit on the rich side.

If you are a fan of truly decadent desserts that look innocent....then try the creme caramel. Divine! Beautifully creamy with flecks of vanilla, topped with a delicate sugary crust. Very rich and very lovely. We shared one and agreed that trying to have one on your own would not be for the faint hearted!!.

The staff and manager were great (if a little hard to understand at times - they speak very quickly!). The venue is beautifully fitted out and is perfect for that romantic evening for two.
