“GREAT VALUE BUDGET HOTEL "LOCATION...LOCATION...LOCATION"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

This has been my second stay at the hotel in the past 12months.Everything is very handy and all within at most a 15 min walk! A short tram ride to city ( Tram Stops are everywhere surrounding the block of the hotel)...but I preferred to walk (only 15 mins to City Centre). Dining out in Lygon Street is a casual 15 min stroll up Grattan Street. A further 7 mins will take you to Melbourne Museum and Carlton Gardens.
Coles Express Supermarket is close by in the Melbourne Central Complex.
Trams to St Kilda And Chapel St depart close to the hotel.
The hotel is only a couple of blocks from Victoria Markets.
The kitchen contains all crockery, cutlery and cookware for your use. A microwave oven and a two plate cooktop are fitted in the kitchen as well as a small bar fridge.
The double rooms are adequate in size for a couple or one person. Centrally heated in winter and air-conditioned in Summer.
Please keep in mindThe rooms are very clean and modern and found no problems over my 4 night visit. Keep in mind it is budget accommodation and you won't be dissapointed.
If you want a 5 star hotel suite I suggest you go pay the 5 star price.
It's a great place to stay- quiet, yet centrally located on the edge of the city.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel, they have small balconies on the second or third floor!

We stayed here for 5 nights and it was absolutely lovely. Right next to the Queen Victoria Markets and only a few min by tram into the city. Also the kitchen is really handy and you will find everything you need to cook up a fresh meal. Would stay here again!

Room Tip: Higher floors are less noisy, we stayed on the ground floor and could hear the shower from the unit...

The location was pretty good, as it was at the city fringe. It was right in front of a tram station and a short walk to the CBD. I would not feel safe coming here at night, alone though. The immediate neighbourhood is rather sparsely populated and there were not many passers-by.

The room had a kitchen - with a double stove top and a good size sink, and the fridge and the microwave that were in working condition. The bathroom was a good size as well. I did not feel the bathroom was particularly cramped. However the size of the room did not allow for much luggage at all. It was quite difficult in fact, to get around the two beds to get from one side of the room to the other. I liked the cupboard which I used as a closet to leave my clothes in. My luggage bag had to be left below the TV stand/table on one side of the room, and the other suitcase had to be left on the dining table.

The size and the quality of the bedding was good.

The heater was ok, however it poured out a lot of hot dry air right onto the top of one of the beds, so I couldn't have it on at night.

The blinds on the balcony door was not the right size. It did not cover the whole balcony door and the room could be looked into, if it was on street level. At night time, I could see the red/yellow lighting from a rental car place outside.

The walls were dirty, and the bathroom did not look like it had a good mop in a while. However I did not find anything particularly dusty and I did not find hair anywhere...

Oh and there is NO WIFI.

Overall, it's not top notch but it's fine, considering the price.

Overall a great place to stay. I was a bit dubious based on previous reviews, so rang the reception directly to ask a few questions. The girl on the phone was friendly, informative, and made sure all information was clarified before making the booking.

Location: Truly on the city edge, with a tram stop right outside the front entrance, and another on the street behind. Otherwise it's only a few minutes walk into the city. The Queen Victoria Market is only about a block away, and there are restaurants, pubs, and convenience stores nearby.

Room: We stayed in a 'double studio room'. Neat and compact, but not as tiny as I'd expected based on previous reviews. There's a divider between the bed and couch/TV area, good sized ensuite, and a small balcony. Ample facilities in the kitchenette, and we could ask for refills of tea when we ran out. Everything was very clean, except a hair on one of the towels. Otherwise it was spotless.
The room wasn't noisy at all - our room was located at the back of the building so perhaps this helped.

Overall: a great place to stay if you don't want to stay in the heart of the city, and there's easy access to town anyway. The room had enough space and everything you'd need. We stayed for 4 nights and while the room wasn't serviced, we could ask for replacements of items if required. I'd definitely recommend this place to others.

The main reason you'll stay here is for value & location, the studio rooms are small, very small, but are functional & newish. If you can live in a caravan, you'll like this place. The inner courtyard facing rooms are quieter re road noise. There are many long term student residents here, but apart from one night (in 6) the residents were quiet. The bed was comfortable the linen/towels clean plus flat screen TV. The walls are scuffed & dirty in places, but could be cleaned if management was willing, as the paintwork is newish. As there is no room cleaning in under a week stays, a dustpan or broom would be useful (but not supplied.) New towels can be obtained from reception after 2 days. As others have said, the blinds don't cover the windows well, so bring the eye shades (& ear plugs). Tram 55 runs on Peel st, although walking to city/Brunswick st/Lygon st is easy. Reception staff were friendly & helpful, one more so than the other. Yes there is a $150. refundable bond. Overall , good value for money & I would stay again.

Room Tip: Inner courtyard facing rooms are quieter re road noise, but may not have a good outlook

We got into Melbourne at 6.00 am and were in the CBD at 7.00. We decided to see if we could drop off our bags as we couldn't check in until 2.00 pm. When we got there they told us there was a room already done up and we could check in straight away. Bonus! The lady behind reception was very nice and told us where our room was. The room itself was alright but a little small. The walls were a bit scuffed but the place was clean as were the sheets and towels. The slightly odd thing was that next to the bed was a wooden sliding floor to celing door so you could partition the room which we did at night to stop the lights from Toyota blinding us. The blinds in place did not cover the whole of the windows and so the room was quite light at night. However, we did sleep fine. The downside to this place is that at the time I booked it the website said it had internet. This place has no internet - none! So I often frequented Federation Square to use the free WiFi. As for the location it is close to Victoria Markets and for our whole stay we did not need public transport we walked everywhere in the city.

When we looked on lastminute.com they said they had internet access and they did not.

They also said that they had an airport shuttle and did not say that it wasn't free... it's $17AUD like the Skybus.

It was a tiny apartment with a lot of noise from the outside roads and businesses. In which only one window opened, and that was the sliding glass door to the TINY balcony (no screen).

Their idea of a full kitchen was also a hot plates and a microwave.

Worst of all they wanted a $150 bond when we arrived. When we had pre-paid and there was no mention that I would have to pay a bond upon arrival. They then claimed it would take 72 working hours for the money return to my account. I don't feel that it should take that long for a bond I didn't expect to pay in the first place.

The only saving grace was its location, but that's easy to see on any booking website.

Dear StartsnendswA,

City Edge North Melbourne Apartment Hotel is a modern and cost effective place to stay. Our special deals of $89 per night for 4**** accommodation do not include neither free airport transfers nor WiFi internet.

Possibly next time you could consider to stay at our City Edge on Elizabeth Apartment Hotel, which offers one and two bedroom spacious apartments.

However you do need to pay for the airport transfer or usage of internet when staying at City Edge hotels as we promote our brand as low cost hotels and all thrills are there for you - but need to be paid for.

Kind regards,
manager.
