“Great views; light and bright rooms.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

We enjoyed our stay here. Great location, but Bourke St is a very busy thoroughfare and could be noisy. The view from our upper story floor to ceiling window was fantastic. The bathrooms are small but adequate. Loved the lap pool. We stayed during Easter and management left little surprise packages of treats for us to find, quite by accident. I will definitely go back.

I love this place. BUT if you are a business travel you will be very disappointed by the internet speed. Limited to 500k per room and realistically no more than 350k, this is awful. When will management realize, for business, remote presentations webex/skype etc., you need at least 1000k (1 mb). Even mobile WIFI and 4g are at 1MB to 20mb. For a hotel, high speed should mean high speed, not 6x 1995 modem speeds.

Room Tip: Good if you don't mind 2001 internet speeds.

Hello Fran_0007,

Thank you for your review, we love that you love Citadines on Bourke Melbourne!

We are happy to say we are one of very few properties in Australia to offer complimentary internet/ Wi-Fi to all our guests. Since the introduction of complimentary usage we understand that during peak periods the speed can be slightly slower, and we are currently reviewing this to ensure the speed is at an acceptable level for all.

Thank you again for your review and we do hope that we will be able to welcome you back again soon.

Kind Regards,

Stayed on the 21st floor which was extremely quiet with very thick/block out curtains so we did not wake til late on each of the four days that we were there. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was clean, very well equipped and spacious. An added bonus was free Wifi. The staff were friendly and very accommodating and the hotel is central to shopping, restaurants, pubs and Chinatown. The gym is also well equipped and whilst I didn't have time to swim, the pool looked inviting. Would definitely stay here again. Good value!

Room Tip: Ask to stay on a high floor to make the most of any views.

Stayed at the citadines for 5 days last december. Service at the front desk was quick and hassle free. The room was spotless, bathroom was ok sized, the mini kitchen came with complete utensils. The room was minimalist in designs but comfortable. There is a tram stop right in front of the hotel. 5 mins walk from the bourke st mall and chinatown, 10 mins walk to melbourne parliament building. Great location, will be back.

Despite doing a lot of travel each year I am not really one for writing reviews - but this 'hotel' was actually that bad/disappointing I most probably should warn others!

We were travelling from Perth and chose to pay a bit more and stay in a 1x bedroom Executive apartment for 3 nights. Upon arrival I'm not really sure what happened - the staff member simply didn't speak any English - neither me or my partner could understand him and a female employee had to come over to check us in for him. We were in room 2111 (21st floor) - brilliant view of the city, large room but the facilities were a real disappointment. The carpet had clearly not been vacuumed prior to our arrival, the shower / bath was rusted all around and the shower door appears to have been broken off and removed - hence the shower head became a shooting water fountain across the bathroom. The facilities were very simple - only a couple of plates, glasses and a microwave container - not sure how you could exactly prepare a meal in a kitchen that's decked out with a dishwasher & oven - but nothing to actually put in there! The bedding was overly-soft, and the pillows cheap & nasty.

We stayed for 3 nights and not once was our apartment cleaned - We called up guest services after the 2nd night requesting a clean - within 5 minutes there was a knock on the door with a staff member chucking some towels at us and stating 'I don't do cleaning'.

What I found to be most strange was the pre-authorisation on my credit card for the full cost of the stay (approx. $680) plus a security bond of $150 upon check-in - that is of course expected at any hotel, however upon checking out, I was told I must pay the full cost of the stay again, whilst the original $680+150 would be returned to my card in the next few days. Couldn't really understand why the cost of the stay isn't just deducted from the pre-authorisation, rather than me having over $1,500 deducted or placed on 'authority hold' by Citadines.

Very unfortunate that a hotel in a great location with amazing views is ruined by the clearly disorganised staff & management. A waste of money and certainly wouldn't recommend upgrading to an executive apartment. Have stayed in cheaper but nicer / better equipped hotels around Melbourne.

Will we be back?... certainly not!

Would we recommend it?... certainly not!

Room Tip: Higher the better, or view will be obstructed by surrounding buildings

Bryan L, Manager at Citadines on Bourke Melbourne, responded to this review, April 7, 2013
Dear TimA551,

Warm greetings from Citadines on Bourke Melbourne, and thank you for sharing your recent experience.

We regret that your experience was disappointing in certain areas, and we have addressed the concerns you raised with the Housekeeping and Maintenance Managers for immediate rectification. This certainly does not reflect the high standards for which we aim.

The kitchens of our serviced residences are equipped with crockery and cutlery for four persons, in addition to cookware (for both stove and microwave), kettle, toaster, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator and electric cooktop. While such amenities do not, and are not intended, to match those of a comprehensive home kitchen, we believe that they are more than adequate for our guests to prepare meals.

We are sorry to hear that our bedding was not to your liking. Experience has shown that this is a matter of personal taste, as many guests have enquired about purchasing similar bedding for their own homes.

As a serviced apartment property, we offer houskeeping service daily except on Sundays and public holidays. This is published on all channels through which our accommodation is sold, and signage was also placed at Reception prior to, and throughout, the Easter long weekend advising guests of this.

Our records indicate that, per our usual practice, your credit card was processed, or "pre-authorised", upon arrival to ensure sufficient funds would be available to cover both the accommodation and $100 (not $150) for incidental expenses. On check-out, the balance on your account was simply deducted from the amount held on check-in.

It is delightful to hear that the spacious apartment in which you stayed, coupled with the breathtaking city views, enhanced your visit. Should your plans bring you back to Melbourne, we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back again.

Yours sincerely,

Bryan Loh

Second stay at Citadines on a trip to Melbourne and again very happy with the accommodation and terrific service from the staff. Stayed over the Easter long weekend and upon arrival was given an upgrade due to problem with our previous stay. The room we were allocated was nice although bed very soft and Chris at reception was very helpful in arranging another room. This is what really makes Citadines a lovely place to stay, the genuine care and concern of the staff and particularly Chris, Stephanie and Tomas...thank you. The room itself was modern, very clean and functional with the kitchen being the best we have experienced at hotels. The location of the hotel in Melbourne is ideal with a tram stop virtually outside the door and very handy to all the tourist sites and shopping. The only small downside would be the chairs at the desk in the room...very hard if you are sitting on them for a while! Would definitely stay at this property again on a trip to Melbourne.

Room Tip: The fitness centre while small has everything you need

Just returned from a weeks stay at Citadines on Bourke and was very happy with our stay. It's clean and modern, we were on the 21st floor and had nice views over the city. The staff were friendly - always happy to help and greet you with a hello, evening etc.. As you walk through reception. The wifi was free which I was happy with. I liked that the whole place had a new, modern feel and was so clean. It was also central to everything.
