“Great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

I booked in for a four night stay and am currently spending my third night at the hotel. Room is compact but very clean with large flat screen TV, desk and very comfy bed. Only a 6 minute walk from skybus terminal. No cafes or convenience stores in the immediate vicinity but plenty in the next street and near Southern Cross Station. The air conditioning is the best and easiest to work of any hotel I have stayed in. No remote, just slide a switch, turn a dial and instant cool air - love it. I would definitely stay again. It is also a very safe hotel as we had to evacuate last night due to a strong burning smell on 12 th level. I was in a deep sleep but the evacuation voice and signal was loud and clear and boomed into the room waking me up at 1 .20 in the morning. Fire brigade attended and eventually all was well. It is comforting to know that this hotel has a fire plan and a very loud and effective alert system that no one could sleep through. I was late to breakfast the next morning and the attendent kindly offered to give me directions to some cafes serving breakfast. All the staff are friendly and the large modern art prints on the walls are a nice feature. Even has room service. Decor in room is modern and minimalist. Great for exploring Melbourne and having a comfortable bed for the night. There is little noise either inside or out. At less than 100 per night for my stay it is a bargain.

Clean, tidy, modern, well looked after and organised. Located a few hundred yards from Southern Cross Station so good for access to the city, and on the fringe of the CBD, so good location if you want somewhere a bit quieter. Only thing against it might be that it's in Docklands, which is very sterile and pretty deserted in the weekends, unless Etihad Stadium is being used, where I suspect it will be jammed with people going to and from the game(s).

This hotel is clean, and very much a place for the single traveller. Why? Because the rooms are tiny, the bathrooms are so compact that if you are a larger well endowed person you really would have trouble. The location is tucked away in the back street of the Docklands in Melbourne. Unfortunately every room has the same view, one of a large office building straight into the office. The lights in these offices are on all night and I was on the very top floor of the hotel and it made no difference whatsoever. I can handle compact, but what I really hated were the pillows and the bed. It was like sleeping on a cement block, the pillows were just a cheap polyester and flat. The room service menu looked like a microwave food array and the parking was in another building, through the office complex and up a lift. If you are looking for budget hotel then this may take your fancy, but you can find a more comfortable bed on the other side of the station at a cheaper price.

Room Tip: Don't go to this hotel if you want a room bigger than a caravan!

Dear Kerrivv

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. If I could respond to some of your comments as follows:

Our beds are all Sleepmaker Hotel Supreme ensembles. They may not be your preference however I can assure you the overwhelming feedback is in fact positive as they are a quality bed.

Our pillows are all Tontine. We replace our pillows on a regular basis and in fact every one of the nearly 1000 pillows in the hotel were replaced 2 weeks ago.

Our guest rooms are 24 square metres on average. This is on the generous side for an economy brand hotel. We do have hotels in the group with larger guest rooms and bathrooms however at our price point we feel they represent excellent value.

Kind Regards

James Coleman

ok place to stay. nice and handy to southern cross station. front desk staff helpful and friendly although this establishment takes $100 off c/card and gives back into account within approx 5 days after checking out which annoys me because l didnt use mini bar or charge anything to room.Great aspect of room was microwave without the apartment cost. overall stayed at better but stayed at worst also.

Room Tip: go higher floors

Dear melissa d

Thanks for taking the time to review our hotel. We are sorry you found the preauthorisation on your credit card inconvenient. It is standard hotel procedure and allows our guests to charge back meals and other services to their room.

We hope you choose to stay with us again.

We booked this for one night through Wotif. It was good value and only $20 for 24 hour parking undercover. Close to Crown and Harbourtown shopping plaza. Room was clean and comfortable. Reception was friendly and efficient. Would stay there again.

Room Tip: Some rooms have better views than others, so ask when booking

Although everything worked the way it is supposed to, I have a few reservations. We were actually asked to do a review, so, I thought this may be useful. First a positive, it was raining heavily when we went out and they were quite happy to loan us umbrellas. However, I really think a large franchise like Travelodge could afford not to charge 1.5% for credit card payments, and even when you book over the net, it is still charged. The small cafe in Carlton where we had breakfast the next day made a point of saying it did not charge for Eftpos payment. Also, a discarded food tray outside a room we passed on our way back from our evening out, was still there next morning when we left at around 8:30am. Finally, it's about time wifi was free in big establishments. It is a nonsense that one should have to pay nearly $20 for overnight access.

Nevertheless, the room was comfortable and the staff were very pleasant and unruffled.

I am glad you generally enjoyed your stay and have taken your comments on board regarding credit card surcharge (we don't charge on Eftpos), and the Wifi. We do have free Wifi in the lobby if you do choose to stay with us again.

Good location. Close to southern cross station and a free circular tram pickup point. Walking distance to grocery stores and there are some nice restaurants close by. Quiet, clean. Professional and helpful staff. Would stay here again if we come back to Melbourne.
