“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

We stayed at the Hotel Sofia for one night as we were in Melbourne for a gig at the Etihad Stadium. The location was great for the stadium, train station, bars and shops. We had a double room with shared bathroom, which was clean and had most facilities you could want. Could have done with a bit more shelf space in the shower room. The breakfast was included in the rate and was a buffet style of lots of eggs and toast, but no sausage or bacon. The price was reasonable given the location, quality and breakfast. We would stay there again.

I don’t know if this review is still helpful as we stayed here in 2009. My partner and I were students and were looking for budget accommodation. Only good thing about this hotel was its location. I was taken aback by the shabby hallways and room. Thank god we had a friend who was taking us around both days and we only returned to sleep here. The bed was fine and clean sheets thankfully.
Another good thing was their receptionist on the first morning. We had taken the early morning flight and arrived at the hotel way before check in time (with luggage). The receptionist asked us to wait in the lounge/dining area and offered the hot breakfast. Which was nice for us budget tied people.
I would not recommend this place though.

The location of the hotel is within walking distance to Melbourne's Southern Cross Railway Station - about 4 streets away and Melbourne's free Public City Circle Tram just 1 street away. Melbourne's famous Queen Victoria Market is nearby. The hotel is very dated with worn and old furniture in the rooms, especially the stained carpets and chairs. This hotel needs to be refurbished extensively, especially if it wants to call itself a boutique hotel. This is actually a 1-star hotel. The rooms are noisy from street traffic and you'll hear a lot of noise coming from the bar located at the ground level of the hotel. Safety was a huge concern because anyone can enter the bar from the street and will gain easy access to the hotel's small reception area - where the elevator services all 3 floors of the hotel. The bar door is always left open during bar hours. Receptionists are cold - no smiles or a warm greeting. Food served in the breakfast area is mediocre. Hot food (eggs, bacon, pancakes) run out fast and are not replaced quickly nor are the hot trays checked often. Not once in 3 days did we see restaurant staff wipe down nor clean a table after it was used. They just take the utensils and dishes away. Breakfast staff are unfriendly - both woman have ice-cold faces - never smiling nor polite. It seems they don't like their job. Internet access is not free. Pass this hotel up - it's not worth the cost and free breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the street, not near the elevator, not above the bar and not on the side o...

So I stayed at this place last year, spent hours writing a review to add to the 400 others that hated the place and for some reason they are no longer on here...
Hmmm I wonder who could of deleted it off??? Waste of time really because by the looks of it, the new reviews are not much better...
I warn you people DO NOT STAY HERE..

The Bedroom measures 2.5m x 2.5m, They are JUST pub rooms with a coat of paint. The true value of the room many be $60, They would be 3 star rating at the most, As for Carparking, bring along a cut lunch and Simpsons Donkey. Will not ever stay here again

Room Tip: Dont stay here

Just lived there , will never return , it is a nightmare .

1. can't believe it is 4 stars , if Ibis is 2 stars .

2. the bed almost occupies 85% of the room ;

3. when it refers to "double room" , only 1 bed inside ; seems they have different standards of their own ;

4. the elevator is so small , said could hold 8 people , but 4 is enough .

5. there is also a CRT television hang down the roof in the room ,

6. The window is made of two piece of glass , and could not close well , the leakage let cold air through all night . not safe at all , if you hang head out of the window , you would worry the glass would fall down and cut your neck . at least I got this feeling .

7. And the hotel policy is just printed out on one white paper w/o any heading , says " no bikes , no camping gear allowed in the room " , it is so informal , every detail tells you this is a fake 4 star .

I am not complaining , but this is the truth , and they are paying commission to agents . such as booking.com ;

Small but functional and clean room. Nice and close to everything

Major gripe - there's no way this is a 4* hotel - that's what it's rated as but those pictures on the website look like they got a lot of photoshop and wide angle treatment lenses....

If they called it 3* you'd rate it ok for Australia and recommend it but not with the subterfuge
