“Great Hotel, Great Location, Great eBikes...a must!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2010

My wife and I decided to be a tourist in our own city. We wanted somewhere close to Melbourne's CBD, St Kilda's beach, The Dockland precinct and Carlton's classic Lygon Street. We settled for the Blackman one of Melbourne's newest 5 star hotels. What a find. Centrally located on St Kilda Road minutes from Albert Park Lake and Fawkner Park and right next to the tram stop. Anywhere you wanted to go in minutes....fantastic.

We had a deluxe suite which was beautifully appointed with a kitchenette and for once a hotel that has a real refigerator and freezer. The two burner stove top and microwave means you can be self sufficient if you need to be. The hotel has a great restuarant and the Depot de pain is great for breakfast, coffee or cake and of couse great bread.

You absolutely must hire the hotel's e-bikes. These brilliant electric bikes allow you to travel up to 50km in distance and have a speed of up to 33 kph. They are easy to ride and heaps of fun. We took them on th bike tracks around Albert Park Lake, along the St Kilda foreshore to Beacon Cove, then back to Elwood, back to Melbourne's Botanical gardens and then to the hotel with still enough battery power to go further. Forget the car, hire an e-bike it will be the best value you can spend your money on and HEAPS of fun. I know what I have on my Christmas list!!

Cheers Joseph - Mooroolbark

We stayed at the hotel for 8 nights in November 2010, the hotel is very modern and the rooms are very nice. Our room had a huge terrace with a great view of the park and st kilda. The bathroom only had a shower but was very high quality. I loved this hotel and would certainly stay again. In the loddy you have a breakfast place which does fantastic flat white coffee and the Itallian restaurant opposite does the best gnocci. I would highly reccommend the hotel, the staff are great, and you can hire a smart car or bikes form the hotel which is a really fun idea. You can also use the swimming pool at the cullen which is great if the weather holds in Melbourne.

Stayed for just one night but have booked to stay longer next time. We had the entry level suite on a high floor with views out to the bay which were spectacular . Loved the bed and the artwork. A few quirky features (which other reviewers have mentioned ) - I think might be annoying if you stayed more than a couple of days. Nowhere to put things in the bathroom except for a silly skinny cupboard above the loo and basin - I kept thinking our stuff could easily fall into the loo :( Very flimsy perspex chairs that a large person would think twice about sitting on ! TV not in the best spot for watching from bed. Slight road noise so we were glad we had a room on the bay side. Friendly, helpful staff and easy access to the city, great patisserie downstairs ! Yes we will be back many more times I am sure :)

Thought we would try the Blackman after reading many positive reviews. The good points are many, the rooms are very clean and have an uber cool feel with the furnishings and the artworks. The cafe down stairs is fantastic, all the staff in the hotel and the associated cafe etc are very friendly and accomodating and the hotel is in an ideal position for a short tram ride (5-10 mins)into the very heart of the city centre.
We ordered room service one night and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. We also took advantage of the chance to hire a smart car for a short drive around the neighbourhood, it was alot of fun. We didnt get the chance to dine at the italian resturant -but that gives us anothter reason to go back soon. Suggestions for improvement - if we were being really picky would be - better mood lighting in the bedroom, a lit mirror in the bathroom (for make up application) and a more comfortable lounge to lounge on in the living room, but that is being picky - we had a lovely time and are already hoping to return during the easter break all being well :)

The hotel service was great and the bed was extremely comfortable. However, some of the frills of an expensive hotel were missing. The lighting in the room was poor with two lights broken, there was no 'do not disturb' sign, there was a minor amount of rubbish remaining in the room and there was nowhere to put your luggage. The $8 bottle of water next to the bed gave you a feeling of the hotel being money hungry. My biggest problem with the hotel was that the rooms were loud, both from the constant whirring of the fridge and the massive air conditioning unit on the building next door. I was also woken at night by a kitchen appliance beeping. Although I knew it in advance, I was also dissapointed by the lack of swimming pool.

If you like modern art, the Art Series hotels are a must. Modern themes, prints and originals adorn the hotels and rooms. Rooms are fairly roomy, with kitchen facilities. Big, big beds with the best mattresses and lots of fluffy pillows...sleeping was a dream! Front desk staff were terrific - nothing was a bother for them. There is a yummy French bakery and an Italian restaurant on the ground floor - both open all day. Offerings from both were on the upper end of good. We appreciated the off street parking for minimal cost. Located close to St Kilda Road tram stops, a stones throw from the city. A very, very pleasant surprise! Excellent all round.

Staff could not do enough for us on both occasions.
Great location for walks around Albert Park, easy tram to city and complimentary 8am shuttle to Flinders Street. (Bikes also available) Restaurant adequate, coffee shop friendly and light meals tasty. Preferred room type definitely Deluxe with balcony. Parking on site - what more could one want.
