5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

I stay at The Blackman over 120 nights a year. I travel from Sydney 1-3 times a month. The team are always friendly, helpful and courteous. Each of the rooms is well laid out with beautiful art from Charles Blackman. Both Classico and Depot de Pain provide delicious food and warm service every time. My family and friends love The Blackman too!

We chose this hotel on the basis of excellent tripadvisor reviews and fully endorse them. The hotel does not waste space on large public areas or fancy restaurants but concentrates on what is important - the size and quality of the bedrooms, all individually designed. The rooms are a good size with comfortable beds and excellent bathrooms. A small kitchenette, also beautifully designed, comes equipped with a fridge, microwave, small hob, sink and dishwasher, allowing guests to fend for themselves if they want. This is aided by the French style boulangerie/patisserie on the ground floor where you can buy the ingredients for a continental breakfast or simple lunch or light dinner.
The hotel is a little out of the centre but with good connections into the city.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone who is interested in affordable luxury.

Buonconvento, Thank you for your review 'Affordable Luxury'! Our three Art Series Hotels, while individually inspired by each artist, are all designed with the same versatility in mind - our guests have the option to experience Melbourne's amazing restaurants but also be able to whip up something quickly if it suits.
It so pleasing to see that you enjoyed your stay with us and would also recommend us to others and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future!

The decor is up to the minute but very comfortable. The staff are helpful and pleasant - none of the attitude that makes me wary of many 'hip' hotels. The coffee and food at the bistro are excellent. The little extras are nice - reasonably priced minibar, mircowave in room, guest laundry.

All in all a very pleasant stay and I will return.

Be aware that the location is out of Melbourne's CBD (although transport is very good and ambience does make up for that to some degree) and that beds are, in many rooms, only queen size and there is no bath.

SydneySydney66, Thank you for your review following your recent stay at The Blackman. It is great to know that you enjoyed your stay and found our team friendly and helpful! We do pride ourselves on offering 5 star service without attitude.
While our location is just outside the city, transport is in abundance as you mentioned, and it also provides easy access to St Kilda, South Yarra, Albert Park and Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens, just to name a few of the cities hot spots.
If you are after a king bed and shower on your next visit, both options are available in our Deluxe Studio Suite Balcony rooms.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Kind Regards

Thanks to the Blackman for such a wonderful experience.! Impeccable service from the lovely staff, attention to detail with everything, they could not be more helpful. I loved the ambience and you can tell that all the features and decor have been carefully selected.  It is so much better than staying in a bland ubiquitous hotel that you see everywhere with the same colors etc Fab location near the city, lake & gardens, great for runners, party people and for business! I would definitely recommend the Blackman as the most beautiful boutique hotel in melbourne, oh and did i mention how amazing the beds are! Thanks again!

Amdb11, Wow! Thank you for your review following your stay with us at The Blackman. Your comments regarding our service have been passed onto our entire team - they are very much appreciated. We do try to be a little bit different and both our people and our decor draws inspiration from all of the fabulous Charles Blackman artwork that surrounds us. It is great you were able to enjoy all that our location can offer and will recommend us as the most beautiful boutique hotel in Melbourne - That's quite the recommendation!

We hope to welcome you back to The Blackman again soon.

Rate this hotel as four and half stars, the staff rated five stars, they were excellent, friendly and very courteous. Room service was very prompt not like some hotels we have been too.
Two places to eat at the hotel and they were very reasonably priced, foods good too. About 7 tram stops to Flinders Street, with a good views and interesting stops, The Art Centre, War Memorial and gardens. Remember to take your MKI.

Room Tip: Bay side balcony room has great view.

Great hotel for Art and Food lovers. The service was excellent. The breakfasts in the bistro were great (slow baked tomatoes beautiful) but the Coffee and pastries in the bakery were far more popular with the tourists and the locals. Quirky decor and artworks galore with very comfortable rooms. Get on the western side to get views of the lake and bay. Great spot because you could eat in the city or St Kilda, which were both 6 or 7 minutes away on the tram. 5 minutes to the National Gallery and a comprehensive list of local galleries in the room info.

Greg S, Thank you for your review 'Quirky Weekend Destination'. We too like to think of The Blackman as a great hotel for art and food lovers alike, and what better city for it! It is great to know you found our service excellent and were able to enjoy all that Melbourne has to offer during your stay with us. And yes you're right, our pastries are very popular, and go hand in hand with a good coffee - a great start to the day.

We look forward to welcoming you back to The Blackman on your next visit to Melbourne.

We were impressed with the hotel. It was a very convenient location next to St Kilda Rd, which offered easy access to the centre. Service was very good and the room and facilities excellent. We ate one meal in the bistro, which was very good, if a little pricey.
