I stayed at the Blackman for a week and had two adjoining rooms for my family of four. The hotel is as described on the web site, tastefully furnished and very arty. Each room has a kitchenette and balcony with outdoor furniture and is very spacious and clean. They provide black slippers and nice thick towels and robes. There is a shelf of coffee table art books and a channel with a documentary on Charles Blackman. You could easily sink your head into the pillows without them losing their fluffiness. While there aren't many cafes or restaurants close by, there are two really good restaurants at the hotel. One is Classico, an Italian restaurant where they do handmade pastas and pizzas and cocktails. The other, Depot du Pain, is a French cafe that is perfect for breakfast and lunch with a selection of pastries, baguettes with different fillings and omelettes, crepes, and other French fare. Both restaurant have alfresco areas looking out to the small leafy street. The tram stop is a few meters away on St Kilda Road, so it is easy getting around to anywhere. The hotel also has bicycles, Smart cars and electric bikes for hire. However, there are only two bikes and if these are unavailable, Melbourne Council have bikes for hire at different points in Melbourne and you can buy new helmets and pay for hire cards at a 7/11 (one around the corner). Hire is very cheap and helmets are $5.
The gym is small, but equipped with very modern equipment and it stays open at all hours.
My main recommend for improvement would be to replace the shower heads with ones that allow stronger water pressure. I think weak water pressure is false economy - it only results in longer showers.
On the whole, we were very satisfied with this hotel and would stay here again!
