“Nice, quirky boutique hotel in nice location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2012 via mobile

I stayed at the Blackman for a week and had two adjoining rooms for my family of four. The hotel is as described on the web site, tastefully furnished and very arty. Each room has a kitchenette and balcony with outdoor furniture and is very spacious and clean. They provide black slippers and nice thick towels and robes. There is a shelf of coffee table art books and a channel with a documentary on Charles Blackman. You could easily sink your head into the pillows without them losing their fluffiness. While there aren't many cafes or restaurants close by, there are two really good restaurants at the hotel. One is Classico, an Italian restaurant where they do handmade pastas and pizzas and cocktails. The other, Depot du Pain, is a French cafe that is perfect for breakfast and lunch with a selection of pastries, baguettes with different fillings and omelettes, crepes, and other French fare. Both restaurant have alfresco areas looking out to the small leafy street. The tram stop is a few meters away on St Kilda Road, so it is easy getting around to anywhere. The hotel also has bicycles, Smart cars and electric bikes for hire. However, there are only two bikes and if these are unavailable, Melbourne Council have bikes for hire at different points in Melbourne and you can buy new helmets and pay for hire cards at a 7/11 (one around the corner). Hire is very cheap and helmets are $5.
The gym is small, but equipped with very modern equipment and it stays open at all hours.

My main recommend for improvement would be to replace the shower heads with ones that allow stronger water pressure. I think weak water pressure is false economy - it only results in longer showers.

On the whole, we were very satisfied with this hotel and would stay here again!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2012

We stayed at the Blackman for four nights as part of a month long holiday around Australia. It is a nice hotel in a good location. Speaking of the location, it isn't in the centre of the city but is close enough to get to everything in the city with tram stops just across the road. In fact it is nicely located in between the city and St Kilda. We knew where it was when booking so weren't disappointed however if you are looking for a city centre location, there are others much better located.

In terms of the hotel itself, it's a bit of a strange one, it's almost schizophrenic. It seems to flatter to deceive in a number of ways.

It's modern and stylish, cool and contemporary and the studio room we had was spacious with a nice balcony and had all the mod cons. However, the shower leaked, badly, the spa bath didn't work and the sink was blocked and despite asking three times for maintenance to look at it, it was never sorted during our stay.

Room service was speedy, the food was good and the french bakery on the ground floor was pleasant with good service and the food was nice too.

We found the staff during our entire stay to be - in a word - bizarre. One minute they were pleasant, warm and welcoming then the next time we saw the same member of staff they'd sneer, turn their noses up and look down on us and others. Indeed, we overheard others complaining and their issues were met by po-faced, disinterested responses. It's not that they didn't help or were particularly rude - it's just that the staff seem to think they're one step above their guests. Bizarre.

My final gripe is the charge for internet access. Come on, were in 2012 - why are we still being asked to pay for internet access? Australia appears to be at the cutting edge of many things including cuisine and tourism in general however they are just so far behind the times when it comes to web access. It's clearly another way to get extra $$ from guests and it's enough to stop me staying somewhere.

The room was cleaned each day, in fact, hold that, it wasn't cleaned, the bed was made and the bin emptied and that's about it. It was titivated rather than cleaned.

In a nutshell, we had a decent stay inspite of the hotel not because of it - i booked this hotel primarily as it has a number 1 position on Trip Advisor [at the time of writing] however, having been i'm not quite sure why as i'm convinced there must be better places to stay in Melbourne that certainly represent much better value.

Thankyou for taking the time to write a review of our hotel.

I was happy to hear you enjoyed the location and the room in general. However it did concern me to hear the issues you found in both the room and with the staff.

We have taken the steps to follow up and address the issues you raised, as we take all feedback very seriously. The service standards you received fall below the standards we strive to achieve here in the hotel.

Thankyou again for taking the time and please contact the hotel directly if you wish to discuss any matters further.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Blackman for a work trip for 2 nights and I could not recommend it highly enough. I would go as far as to say that this is one of my favourite hotels in Melbourne. With easy access to trams to take you straight into the CBD, the business traveller has access to all the services you need as well as the comforts you desire. The furnishings and art add to a unique accomodation experience as do having art books and finishings that truly add a unique ambience to the hotel. I am rarely compelled to photograph my hotel room whilst travelling for work but I can attest to having my camera out in moments of walking through the door for the first time. The room service is equally good and the amenities excellent. Will defintely be returning.

Room Tip: This does sit on St Kilda road however road noise is neglible.

We stayed two nights (Friday & Saturday nights) recently at The Blackman. We were really impressed, the staff were so friendly, the room spotless and with everything you could want, and the bed super comfortable. Well positioned for a short tram trip into the city, and near beautiful parks, it was an easy stroll across the park to South Yarra for some great shopping and eating. We'll definitely visit again.

We stayed three nights at The Blackman in order to attend our friends' wedding in January 2012. The hotel is lovely, the staff are friendly and efficient and the food was great. The room was clean and well laid out and the beds were comfortable. We would have no hesitation in returning to The Blackman.

Upon entering the Blackman, one immediately notices the artwork hung high up to the ceilings. On the left is a restaurant and on the right a patisserie. Blackman had painted a series of "Alice in Wonderland" inspired drawings which was all over the floor and room we stayed on. When we arrived the concierge bumped us up to a deluxe room, which was a lovely surprised. The staff was excellent, room service was great, the bed and self contained room was divine. The Alice in Wonderland theme was cute - with little mirror bunnies around the floors, alice on the shower door, "eat me" magnets, and the room service sign ("still dreaming in wonderland" replaced "do not disturb") was adorable. Right out on the next street there is a tram stop which allowed us to easily access the city. They allowed us to leave our bags the entire day after check out. We were very happy, had a lovely stay, and would definitely return.
