“YHA: best hostel in Oz!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

Yha Central was my second home! Excellent base for your travels: really close to Southern Cross station and in front of one of the City Circle stops; 2 minutes from the Yarra River and the Convention and Exibition Centre. Very helpful staff and very clean hostel.I'd recommend it without hesitation.

If you have an early train to catch the next morning this hostel is perfect - just a five minute walk around the corner and you're at Southern Cross station - another five minutes and you're at the Skybus terminal for the airport connection.
The location would be equally good if you're travelling solo and want a base from which to explore Melbourne but If there are two or more of you, a hotel room in central Melbourne can to be had for the same price or less.
Security is excellent, with a pass-card needed to access the hostel and each floor. Bathrooms are clean and showers good. The rooms are fine (I stayed in a four-bed female dorm) but those conscious of security will miss having a backpack-sized locker. Bunks are comfortable.
Melbourne YHA is on the upper-end of hostels in terms of maintenance and security.
The girl I encountered on check-in was friendly and efficient and I felt I could ask for any directions or advice I needed.
Wifi, as happens too often, was expensive @ $6 ph.
There was noise until quite late from other guests on the terrace and rooftop but earplugs are available at Reception!
Being a YHA there are good bulk-deals available, meaning instead of paying $36 pn you could be only looking at $22 - definitely do this if you are staying in Oz a while.
I would stay here again if travelling alone and recommend it.

Room Tip: As far from the terraces and rooftop as possible because of late noise.

The staff was exceptionally helpful. The facilities are pretty nice. Bathroom and kitchen look new and clean. The free tram is right out front. No free wifi but federation sq is close and has free wifi. A bit pricey but its the city.

This was an okay stay - mostly clean (other than my sheets when I checked in, but this was sorted very quickly), good showers. Quiet and comfortable, and the staff are very helpful. I shared a 4-bed female room both times I stayed, and didn't have any noise problems. Very close to the railway station which was good for trips to other areas, and to get to the SkyBus for the airport. Very convenient.

Really clean room, shared a 4 dorm with 3 other girls. Was right next to the bathroom, so was noisy with people coming in and out. Not such a noisey hostel. Small kitchen, but really big sky roof area to sit and have a think. Locker area on roof, which was expensive. But free storage down stairs on first floor if just for 24 hours. WiFi cheap at $15 for 7 days. I enjoyed my time in the YHA in Melbourne, staff were really helpful and friendly, would pretty much break an arm or leg to answer your questions.

Room Tip: Away from the bathroom and kitchen.
