“A well located efficiency hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2009

If you're looking for luxurious, or even mildly luxurious lodgings, look elsewhere. Causeway 353 is NOT for those who require extras. It has no views. It has a restaurant, which really feels more like a cafeteria. It has a bar, but I doubt that it sees much activity.

Causeway 353 is for no-frills travelers who want a hotel that is clean, well located, and affordable. Causeway 353's main attraction is its amazing location - in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, within walking distance of all major sites, shopping, dining, etc. The hotel is hardly shabby - it has a bit of style to it, but not enough to make it distinctive in any way. It is an efficient, easy place to stay. Continental breakfast is included in your room rate, which does help make a visit to Melbourne more affordable.

In a word - efficiency.

Just got back from Melbourne and started off the first stay at this hotel. I arrived very early and was lucky the room was ready so they let me checked in.

The room is quite decent. Nice and clean with a lot of room for hotel in Aus with this price. The only downfall is that there's no view since it's in a small lane facing other buildings. However the location is excellent.

Never got up for a breakfast so no comment on that. Don't know why hotels in Melbourne asked for a deposit though. Thought it's only this one but I stayed at another hotels and they did the same thing. This didn't happpenned when I stayed in Sydney.

Overall it's pretty value for money since I got a staff rate from my company. Had a lovely stay!

Hotel is in a quite.small alley right in the center of the CBD; close to EVERYTHING! Rooms although small are well appointed; clean and modern. Nice touch with a free bottle of water every day. Quiet and staff friendly; the free continental buffett breakfast was fine (cold meats, cheese, bread, fruit and beverages); gym very tiny ( think a total of 6 machine) and do have self service laundry machines which come in handy. My reservation come with a free 1/2 city tour; which was a graet value add. The rooms, value and location in itself are worth recommending this hotel; but to have all 3 x make it a must!

location in middle of city.if you like to feel like king and queen at hotels then this isnt the one for you. we stayed for aprox $150 inc buffet breakfast for 2 nights and a city sights tour.i had majour problems with the shower and bath fitting-bath plug design kept leaking and shower push button design faulty.our phone didnt work to call downstairs or outside the hotel and on notifying them of this when we first got to our room, we were told someone would come up to fix it.nobody arrived.we went out for dinner and before leaving we let recpetion know that we'd be out until late so if they could fix itb y then.returning late and finding no working phone still i was pretty peved.i again called the next morning and it was finally fixed (apparantlyit was just a flat battery). Also on arriving they give free bottled water in the room but one of our bottles was already open.
buffet breakfast was a poor excuse for that.at the time we went (probably about 9.30)there was no bread out, or eggs.selection very very limited. no natural lighting in restaurant (restaurant actually looked like what i imagine an employee cafeteria) and staff were no-existent. we left this hotel feeling like we have wasted money by going.I've never felt that way after leaving a hotel.there is close parking for $10 perday which was great.or crown complex has $6 per day parking.city highlights tour recomended as you can hop on and off.

Fantastic location without the main street noise (it's tucked down an alleyway) - walking distance to anything you could need, including public transport. New and clean. Nice breakfast spread. From the few interractions I had with staff, they were friendly. I'd definitely stay here again.

This place is right in the heart of Melbourne city but it is tucked away in a little side street so you get not only the convenience but the quietness too. It was such a good base for being in the city with the shops and the train station on your doorstep with good links to the airport and the surrounding suburbs.

The rooms are clean and stocked well and were a good place to rest our heads after a busy day in Melbourne. The staff were all friendly and welcoming, and helped us with directions and good restaurant locations. The breakfasts are continential, and always had a good selection of different items.

This hotel would suit you if you want the convenience of being in the city but also want to pay a little bit less - we were able to find a good deal on their website.

My wife and I spent 4 nights in a quiet, clean, fourth floor room. The room was adequate in size and good in respect of facilities. It was, however, slightly claustrophobic as the windows needed to have their blinds and curtains in place at all times as they looked out on to the building opposite in a narrow lane. The air conditioning system was noisy but necessary as the windows could not be opened. Although relatively new the bathroom basin drain leaked and fittings in the bathroom were loose.
The service varied between excellent, nil and bizarre. My wife wanted fresh milk for tea, offered by the hotel. She rang the service number 50 or 60 times over a three hour period without a reply. When she went to reception the response was negative although she was told milk would be delivered. It wasn't. When she returned to reception an hour later she was told to go to the breakfast room kitchen and to ask for it there. She was at first refused milk but then given some in a sensible container. The next day she went direct to reception. She was at first told there was no milk but then another person on reception said she would get some from another of the hotels. It was delivered in a large bowl. The whole episode was third world service of the worst sort.
The breakfast room, like the reception area, tended to be dark and uninviting although the food provided was pefectly acceptable.
The location is exceptionally convenient in respect of the central business and shopping areas.
