“Excellent location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2009

This hotel is just located within 3 minutes walk of Bourke Street Mall! You can do your shopping and unload your goodies back at the hotel and resume your shopping again! Isn't what wonderful??!! Another plus point if you are taking the free shuttle service from the airport Skybus - the shuttle will stop right outside the side of the hotel facing Little Collins Street - you just need to walk a few metres down the small lane (Equitable Place) to get to the hotel's entrance. Compared to Causeway Inn on the Mall - you need to walk through half of Bourke Street Mall to get to the entrance of Causeway Inn on the Mall. The same applies to many hotels located on the little collins, little bourke streets too - the shuttle cannot stop along those little streets.
Causeway 353 is still relatively brand new. The rooms are a little smallish but not claustrophobic. Bathroom is decent too. For the rate and location, i have nothing but praises for this hotel.
The staff at the reception were very helpful and accommodating. There were some initial hiccups when i checked-in. They had initially allocated me a room right next to the exercise room on the 2nd floor. When i requested a change of room to have more privacy, they obliged with a smile. They gave me another room on the 3rd floor. However, I discovered that the bulbs of the standing light and the workdesk lamp were missing. They couldn't get new bulbs immediately because the maintenance guys were gone for the day. Since I had to do some urgent work that night, they changed me to another room on the 7th floor. The reception ladies were very cheerful, obliging and good natured.
Breakfast was included in my rate. But if breakfast is not included in your rate, no worries! There are many cafes just besides the cafe along Equitable Place. The cafes open very early.
Will definitely stay at Causeway 353 again when I visit Melbourne.

Nice and new hotel, great location in the CBD. Rate included continental breakfast for two in their newly opened dining room. A suggestion to Management, perhaps soft music in the dining room would be a good idea, as it was a fairly large room, and it felt a bit awkward, with no one talking much, and you could've heard a pin drop !!

Stayed for one night, arriving late in the day. Hotel's location in an alleyway was okay, however it was a pain not having anywhere to park your car, as you had to park on a side street, with most of the spots in the street being loading zones, so you had to be quick getting your luggage out, then having to move your car. There were three options for overnight car parks which the hotel had special deals with, however all three were a walk away, though not overly far.

Our room was quite a good size as was our bathroom, with a lovely king size bed. It was fairly quiet on our floor, however we had a party from some nightclub (?) outside our window which was a bit loud, late at night (Thursday). We were on the 3rd floor, overlooking the alleyway. Normally this would have kept me awake, however I was pretty tired, and fell asleep not long after.
(Having said that, the hotel has double glazed windows, and even though both our windows were shut, one couldn't be locked because the catch was faulty. We reported this to Management before we left. This could have made a slight difference with the noise ?).

The alleyway late in the day, was a pretty dull entrance to the hotel, however when we left next morning, the transformation was quite amazing. There are a few cafes, and shops who operate within it, and it was turned into a colourful, busy area with tables and chairs set up along it.

We booked this hotel as we were going to see the Australian Open tennis, and most other (reasonably priced) places were booked out by then. Hadnt seen any photos etc before we left so didn't know what to expect at all when we arrived.
However found this to be a great little hotel. Everything is brand new and very clean, and the staff were really friendly and gave us lots of tips on what to do and where to go. The hotel is right next to the tram lines and a 5min walk to the train station.
Rooms were clean and the gym was pretty good.
Only complaint was them not having a ventilation fan in the bathroom, which made the mirrors steam up like crazy!
Otherwise, great new hotel!

My husband and I had the Causeway 353 hotel recommended to us by our travel agent as it was 4 star and brand new.

However, although it is very new, I don't believe it offers a 4 star experience.

It was the little details that let the place down...
- The electric jug in the room only worked intermittently (and staff seemed unable to provide a solution for this).
- The house maids did a very sloppy job - the bed was never made properly, the floor never vaccuumed, wet towels left behind etc.
- We were not informed prior to our vist that the hotel restaurant is not yet complete and we had to go to a local cafe for our breakfast. This in itself was OK as the food was excellent at the cafe but it would have been nice to be able to have a drink at the hotel bar, had it been finished.
- There were no robes in the room which were listed on the ad for the hotel that we were given.
- The bathroom, although very clean and new, did not have any heating or a decent extractor fan so it was cold and very steamy.
- The voicemail system on the phones was not working even though our phone showed we had a message.
- The decor was very sterile and cold. White, white and more white. (With some industrial grey coloured curtains and black furniture).

Etc etc.

These things may seem very trivial but when you are treating yourself to a costly few nights away in a big city, at a "4 star" hotel, you expect some luxury.

The reception staff were quite nice but the reception area itself was not very inviting.

Yes - the location is brilliant - right in the centre of the CBD and walking distance to everywhere. Yes - the hotel is very new. BUT it didn't feel like a luxurious stay and cost us $200NZ per night which was a lot of money for us.

Having two fire drills within 8 hours didn't add to our good opinion - one of them at 1am on New Year's Day, and another at 9am on New Year's Day...both causing a full evacuation at times when we wanted to be asleep.

The room was an OK size but there was no out-look so you didn't want to spend too much time in there..

Would we stay there again? Maybe, but only if it was a bit cheaper.

Have wanted to stay at the other Causeway hotels after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor, however all the rooms were full. Upon the recommendation of the staff that they have rooms available on their latest property, we decided to give it a try.

The room which we were given was clean according to my standard (I am a cleaniness freak =)).

The location was great as it is near the main streets, walking distance to all attractions, if not you can take the tram nearby. Breakfast was not in the hotel but at a nearby cafe round the corner (yummy).

One thing to note though, for individuals who prefer a view, there was not much as the hotel was located in an alleyway (but we couldn't be bothered as we are not in the room most of the time).

Given the amount that we have paid, it is great value for money.

We stayed here for four nights. The location was fabulous - one minute's walk from Bourke Street Mall, Flinders Street Station etc which was great. We found the staff very helpful and friendly as well.

The room was very small and did not have a particularly nice outlook, but because it was new it was all nice and clean which was great. We overheard some people talking of teething problems with the hotel. The only one we experienced was that the restuarant wasn't open so we had to take vouchers to a nearby cafe. The food at the cafe was pretty average and because it was busy there was a bit of a wait.

Overall i would say if you are there for shopping, dining etc then it's great but if you're planning on spending much time in your room you might get a bit claustrophobic.

The entrance is actually on Equitable Lane, but if you get the shuttle from the airport they give you directions when they drop you off.
