“Loved Rare”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We came here for one of our friends' birthday dinners. We had great experiences at steak restaurants in Australia and we wanted to have one last one before we left Australia. We are glad we picked Rare for that experience.

Our waitress was lovely and the steaks were AMAZING. One recommendation would be for the bar/bartender. We were brought an alcoholic tea when a non-alcoholic iced tea was requested. Also, I don't think the bartender knows how to make a Manhattan because what I received was not a Manhattan. The drink was fine, but not what we requested (the low "bar scene" score is due to this). We kept it and didn't mention it to our waitress since we had already asked for them to take back the tea and we didn't want to come off as the finicky American table. Altogether, excellent meal. Also, we told them before ordering our desserts that it was a member of our party's birthday and they came with a candle in one of our desserts, which was not expected/requested so that was a nice touch.

“Just average steak”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

Tucked in a small alley the Rare Steakhouse has a very nice ambiance and very good service, however I've found the steak only average. Meat quality is high, however everything was ruined by their signature super salty gravy they've put on the meat.
Remove the gravy and you get a straight excellent review.

“Ticks off the boxes for a steakhouse”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

We chose this restaurant as it was close to where we were staying near Parliament. The location on Little Collins Street is a little difficult to find and one would easily miss the steakhouse if one wasn't looking for it.

This was a last minute dining decision for us, and we were pleased to find that there were a number of last-minute openings for the first seating at 5:30 PM.

I ordered off of the "standard" menu which comes with a choice of entrées and main dishes, as well as a glass of wine, for a fixed price. The portions were easily adequate for anybody but the most hearty eaters. The grilled boerewors that were served as the entrée were tasty and not greasy. The 200 g porterhouse was well prepared, but not as tender as I was anticipating.

The person I was dining with had a chicken kebab entrée followed by the chicken breast filet, both of which were well prepared and well flavored. The kitchen was able to custom prepare a side of vegetables exactly to our liking.

The service was prompt and attentive, and the dining atmosphere was very pleasant.

We would definitely come back here again indulge in good steaks.

“A classy steak restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013 via mobile

We visited this restaurant based on the Tripadvisor review and close proximity to our hotel. Despite it being down a side alley the fitout and ambience as you come in is reassuring that you have made a good choice.

The service was great and while we didnt have a booking they quickly sorted out a table.

We didnt choose entrees as the main menu of steak was the reason for the visit. You would have to have a fair appetite to do both ! Steaks were superb and there is a great range of sauce and sides.

The wine list is good but not much range in price options at the lower end.

“Another fine example of why Melbourne is renowned for its fab food & wine!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

The food was excellent, lovely relaxed and warm ambiance (a welcome relief from the pouring rain outside!), the staff were super friendly and accommodating. Sound wine knowledge too!

We had garlic prawns & baked mushrooms with fetta for starters, Joe even ate the mushrooms (his least favourite food!).

Had the most amazing ribeye cooked perfectly and Joe had juicy ribs which literally melted off the bone.

Thank you for making his last weekend in Melbourne so special.

Totally recommend Rare on Lt Collins Street.. x

** PS TIP***: Try the Toffee Apple Martini: Devine!! Also try the broccolini and beans with shallot butter, very tasty! Wearing loose fitting pants is advisable. haha
