My partner and I have had brunch here on many Saturday mornings. The service is quite slow, but on a cold, rainy winters day this cafe is close to the couple of places we need to go to on a Saturday. Every couple of months I manage to drag a workaholic girlfriend away from her desk, and we would meet at Zest for a 40 minute coffee and muffin break. We would go here because it is halfway between our respective workplaces. Today, I met girlfriend for said coffee/muffin/chat and as soon as I had downed the last of my coffee (we had been there 15 minutes), we were asked to leave. And by the tone of the managers voice, it was not an option to stay. I saw the scowl on the face of this man when he seated me and I said we would just be having coffee and cake. No recognition for all the times I have been there - AND HAD TO WAIT 20 MINUTES FOR A LONG BLACK, OR 30-50 MINUTES FOR A TOASTED SANDWICH. ("Sorry. We are busy today" - Looking around there would be, oh, 5 other people in the cafe!) Today, there were vacant tables outside, and it was a beautiful day, but we were not offered a seat out there. We just had our money greedily grabbed from us, and were shown the door. What a sad little business, run by an even sadder little man. (I should have paid with Amex) ZEST, IF YOU HAVE A MINIMUM SPEND POLICY AT LUNCHTIME PERHAPS YOU SHOULD POST A SIGN CLEARLY STATING THIS. I have only been in Hobart 2 years. Prior to this I have lived in 7 other cities across 4 countries. This is the first time I have ever been asked to leave a cafe! How funny! Forget this cafe - Hobart is MUCH better than this. You will be far better off wandering a few metres down the road, turning left onto Liverpool Street and enjoying the delightful Cultura or Kafe Kara.
