Hobart is a small city compared with others in Australia and so the shopping is limited here to your average mall shops. People come to Tasmania to see the beautiful scenery and experience the outdoor life, not to shop. The prices of goods are generally more expensive than the 'mainland' (as the locals refer to the rest of Australia). The exception would be Salamanca Markets, which are held on Saturdays. These are great for local products and produce. The atmosphere is alive with food, music, colours and people. This is the most happening place in Hobart, so to speak. Hobart is a relaxed, quiet place to visit.
