“Lovely looks, lovely staff, but somewhat form over function”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

My Mum and I shared a twin room for 2 nights for a visit from interstate. The place is beautifully designed - as you'd expect from the name. I wouldn't call it cosy - but definitely modern and stylish. Not sure how comfy it would be in winter. Fabulous location by the water which I'd definitely recommend over being in the city or further away if you don't have a car (like us).

Niggling issues with the room: terrible soundproofing. We were both trying to sleep around 9pm and could hear every single word of a phone conversation a woman was having in the room next door (and she wasn't yelling!).
Bathroom - the little table next to the sink is a stupid design. It looks cool but you can't rest anything on it as it's slats of wood. Bathroom door wouldn't close properly - a bit awkward if you're not a couple. My Mum was infuriated by how bad the lighting is in the room - with the room lights on and her bedside light she still found it too dark to be able to read properly.

Good stuff: staff are absolutely outstanding - 100% perfect.
Bar looked really nice but we didn't try it.
I used the little gym - great.
Breakfast / cafe place: OK but I would have liked somewhere with a slightly better range of choices.

It's very expensive, I think, for what you get. If I go back to Tasmania I wouldn't choose to stay there again.

Room Tip: A water view would have been nice but the rooms are already very expensive (and none were available...

We stayed at the Henry Jones for 3 nights straight then left on a tour and came back for 1 night 4 days later. Terrific service. Rooms have very interesting decor. Old and new combined. We had paint flecked barn beams from the factory days held up with old iron pipes around our bed. (kingsize) Had a sofa that seperated the room from the bathroom. That side had modern wood panaling. The bathroom was ultra modern glass inclosed. Gives u an idea about the place. We had build in breakfast which was plentiful and delicious. private safe for valuables in room. Oh but what to do with valubales when we went hiking to Mariah Island. Well the HJ staff resolved that with a safe deposit box requiring 2 keys for while we were gone. When we checked in on return from our camp out the new room AC was not working right. We were immediately moved to a suite. The front desk staff were very receptive to all of our needs. Also, Free wifi throughout. We were loaned an adaptive plug for our devices. And, my husband wrote 3 post cards to US and the desk staff mailed them without charging us for the postage. NIce!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet location

We stayed at the Henry Jones in early December 2013 for 4 nights in a spa room with a view onto the pier and harbour. The whole hotel is quirky because every single room is unique and built in and around the original IXL Jam factory. We were staying for a special occasion. I really liked it, but it just felt a little over-priced. The hotel staff were brilliant and the room service meal was fantastic. We didn't eat in the restaurant as we found the menu a little too experimental for us. But, it was booked out every night so I think that was personal preference. The cafe in/next to the hotel had really average service and if you want anything more than a coffee after 2:30pm - forget it. We had breakfast there each morning and the food was awesome, but the girls serving were woeful. The hotel is an easy 5 minute walk to Salamanca Place with all the fun that holds. Overall, relaxing and good.

After sending numerous emails more than a month before our stay stating that we will be attending a wedding and this stay is our honeymoon, nothing was done for us. We were not looking for anything but just a small gesture or event someone at the reception upon check in to congratulate me and my wife. Our friends sent an open congratulatory card with a present written in large font enjoy you honeymoon and it was delivered by the hotel staff to our room before arrival but none could prepare something to recognize a special moment occasion after all these signals to anticipate our needs. Unfortunately nothing of that nature happened upon arrival. My wife said maybe at turn-down and so we went to Taste of Tasmania and came back later and nothing was done in our room. We waited everyday till check out and we shared our feedback to the receptionist who couldn't do anything at that point.

Room cleanliness is a huge issue for the hotel. The room was so dusty, drawers were not cleaned and one day the housekeeper forgot the duster in our room. You would not expect this level of service for the rate they charge.

Its was a disappointing experience that left sour memories of a lifetime. Please train your associates to anticipate guest needs.

On the other side I would like to recognize one receptionist (forgot his name)who arranged a hairdresser during this period before new year's, my wife was so grateful for that. Thank you

Room Tip: Take the rooms facing the Habor

All the elements are present but they just don't seem to come together to create a great feel, particularly that you would expect from a hotel that pitches itself at a luxury level. Our deluxe room was an awkward, dull and unsettling space that failed to stimulate or gratify any of the senses. This was aggravated by the fact that some of the fittings had obvious signs of wear, a noticeable degree of uncleanliness and the general lack of attention to detail in the overall finish. We were expecting to be immersed with great art works. You even have to ask for bath robes. We were expecting to be immersed with engaging artwork. Not to be. The luggage racks were located immediately under the (rather dull) painting, which meant we couldn't open our suitcases without impacting the painting. An insight into Henry's underlying psyche. Sorry Henry, but you just don't pull this one off. Highly disappointing, particularly when you consider you belong to the same group that brings us the exquisite Saffire Freycinet resort.

We just loved our stay at the Henry Jones. The location is amazing, the rooms are well decorated and a great combination of old and new and the service is outstanding. We have stayed both in a standard room and a spa room with harbour view. Both are nice actually and when the view is not critical, the standard room will certainly suffice. Probably the best hotel in Hobart.

Stayed at the HJ for 4 nights over New Years - perfect location for the Sydney to Hobart yachts, the Taste of Tasmania, or anything, really to do with the harbour and Hobart.
The hotel staff have a fantastic attitude and are extremely helpful.
We did have a few issues, starting with our bags taking over an hour and a half to be brought to the room and refreshes not being done as requested (not being precious but for a 5 star plus hotel and very expensive rates...).
Our bathroom was the worst design imaginable. Although quite large, the door opens inward and, if a person if standing at the single basin sink, another person cannot get into the bathroom - terrible design. Also, bathroom lighting, for a female, is unacceptable.
A hotel of this caliber should also have a tub in the bathroom - there is room for it...it's just not there.
The reading lights above the bed are blinding and not adjustable.
If it is windy outside (it was one night), wind whistles (howls) through the windows and under the door like a banshee.
Although the hotel is very cool, very funky and beautiful (and the bartenders are very talented), it really needs some re-thinking on the practical design of the rooms for comfort.
A definite case of art over comfort in my opinion.
Great spot but way over-priced for the value of the room.
