“Great, unique, friendly”

Great movies and cosy, intimate dining to go along with it. If you like arthouse movies then this is the place in Hobart to go.

“The Ferrari of Cinema”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

Made by the vision of one man with an unbelievable capacity for hard work, the old State Cinema in Hobart (once the last preserve of the Australian Film Institute) was about to fold when John Kelly took on a losing proposition and transformed it into the coolest cinema in Australia. It's got rock-star credentials, a great cafe and bar, superb bookshop and fantastic cinemas more like George Clooney's private screening room than the Hoyts/Villlage auditoriums. No popcorn buckets or icy poles - have a glass of Tasmanian pinot and a savoury muffin and take your glass in with you. John's cinema is a magnet for the smartest people in town. Like parking your red Ferrari in North Hobart.

“Watch a movie in comfort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

This is now the place to watch movies in Hobart. You can take a glass of wine, or tea/coffee etc into the Cinema which adds to the enjoyment. A bookshop and coffee shop are also in the complex. They are also starting to show some "mainstream" movies as well with Skyfall and The Hobbit on the schedule.

“Great movies”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

Yhis is a great place to see the movies that miss the mainstream cinemas. Undergoing great refurbishment and modernisations the State is a must do, whether you are a local or a visitor with some time on your hands. Great selection of movies that change fortnightly.
