“What a great museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Went into the museum basically just to kill some time before going to dinner and what a delightful surprise! The building has recently been renovated and the displays are great, particularly the polar exhibition. Highly recommend it.

“A place to visit again and again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

TMAG was reopened last year after a major revamp. It is a great place to take visitors to Hobart - or even my elderly mother when I want to take her on an outing. The displays have been imaginatively reorganised. The room I first take visitors to is the excellent display relating to Tasmanian aboriginal life, with videos, a bark canoe, a hut, a display of mutton-birding, and a historical timeline - it also shows that indigenous traditions eg making shell necklaces and seaweed baskets are still very much alive. I then take them to the room next door, which has an excellent display of Tasmanian animals (eg the cute quoll), birds, plants, insects. The next room is sad - it focusses on the now extinct Thylacine. Another room stirs up memories of more recent years eg No Dam stickers and posters, an early bushwalkers pack...

There is so much more to see eg I have only looked briefly at the fascinating material in the Bond Store building. But I find an hour or two enough for a visit - then it is time to look round the gift shop and visit the cafeteria.

“A very enjoyable couple of hours”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

We (a family of four with two boys aged 12 and 10) had a spare day in Hobart, and weren't sure what to do, so we chose this museum. It has clearly changed a lot over its long life, starting from an eclectic mix of all sorts of bits and pieces (including sadly Truganini's skeleton for many years).

There are still some galleries which seem to be leftovers from old houses, but there are some great galleries, too.

We enjoyed three galleries in particular
- the exhibition on the Antarctic expeditions, which had some fascinating pictures, and artefacts, as well as a map of Antarctica made out of ice!
- the exhibition on the Thylacine, which had heartbreakingly few actual exhibits, but made the animal come to life for me in ways which it hadn't before
- the exhibition on the Tasmanian aborigines, which had lots of original documents and quotations from the "Black Wars", as well as current cultural artefacts from aboriginal communities on the islands.

It also has a very nice little cafe, and Australia's oldest working hydraulic lift (which gave my boys a good 10 minutes of entertainment).

“TMAG”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

Brilliant museum and gallery. It was a miserable day when we visited, so a great place to spend a rainy day in Hobart.

The staff were very helpful, providing information about guided tours and current exhibitions. The guided tours are particularly helpful, providing a greater insight than just browsing alone. Great interactive elements - push button displays, video presentations etc - so interesting for those with children, too.

The Antarctic exhibition is fantastic - a must see. We spent more time in this exhibition than all the rest together.

We ended up going back for a second visit because we didn't see everything on the first visit. Highly recommended and best of all, it's FREE!

“Educational, revamped, great day for the family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

TMAG has just indergone a renovation, this is a great free family fun day out. The aboiriginal exhibit, the Antartica exhibit (which has lots of hand on activities for children) the beautiful local artworks on display from local and intersate artists. They have incorporated the original architecture into the museum which is extraordinary. Lovely helpful and knowledgable staff. Recommend highly!!!
