“Great place and great renovations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

We visited the Museum and art gallery last weekend and I was really impressed by the way the new additions were done and the beautiful woodwoork gave the museum a really rich feel especially since there is so much talent in Tasmania in the craftsmanship of wood.
There are new exhibits and old ones as well, all laid out really easily and a pleasure to get around. I always love to see the old paintings of people who lived and worked in Tasmania so long ago and imagine them here today to see the change from then to now.
They would be blown away! Beautiful old building and beautiful renovation, don't miss it

“Must see. Beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013 via mobile

Entry costs a (voluntary) donation- well worth it! The museum pays tribute to the architectural history (check out the Bond Store!) while providing a modern, spacious and varied array of exhibits. The place is huge- I spent hours there. The use of technology stimulates all the senses and the range of art and historical artifacts is impressive. The staff are friendly, curtious and plentiful. I cannot speak highly enough of TMAG.

“Amazing Facelift”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

I've lived in Hobart for the last 19 years and grew up with the old TMAG. I loved its kitch displays, the crystal room and the T-Rex skull so it was with a degree of anticipation that I visited the revamped museum for the first time.

It was amazing. I have traveled extensively often visiting museums along the way and the TMAG is up there with my favourites now. The architecture and use of light is beautiful. The displays are interesting and informative and I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw Olegas Truchanas' kayak.

A must visit for any Hobartian or visitor to the state.

“Great place to visit with family.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

Fantastic outing for the young and young at heart! The $30 million redevelopment has revitalised the museum - some of the old favourites are still there (albeit with a face lift) along with new attractions. There are plans that from April the last Sunday of the month will be family days from 11-3 which should be great as there are several amazing carts designed to teach kids. Stop into the cafe on the way home for the prefect way to end a wonderful outing anytime of year (especially in winter).

Thanks for taking the time to review your recent visit to our museum and art gallery.

We're pleased that you enjoyed your visit and we are especially glad that your family enjoyed the trip as well. We've taken greta effort to make sure young visitors are included in the museum experience and that they have a great time while learning about Tasmania and their world.

And a nice coffee at the end of a long gallery-crawl never hurts, right?!

Thanks again for your visit and support.

“At last! - Into the 21st Century.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

A stunning rebirth of one of Tassie's most loved attractions. I first visited this museum in the 1960's and loved it then, I was very young; but I loved the compact way it was presented for such a small museum and I loved the convict and colonial exhibits, the like of which I had not seen before. Now, I am blown away by the space, the light, the artistic presentation and the way it has risen.....into the 21st century like a magnificent phoenix....shedding, as it rises, the tawdry, dusty trappings and remnants of an obsolete era.
Well done to all involved! It's been a long time coming and I know a harrowing one for the TMAG employees who must have been tearing their hair out at the "toing and froing" of ploitical and heritage stumbling blocks, plus that perenial demon - funding! - or lack thereof.
Congrats to all - TMAG is a worthy companion to MONA.
