“Sssshhh, keep it under your hat. Hobart's best kept secret.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2009

Without a doubt, this is Hobart's best kept secret. We attended a 3 day conference in Hobart at the Grand Chancellor Hotel. Obviously the idea was that delegates stayed at the Grand Chancellor but we chose to do a bit of research on places to stay in Hobart. We came across the trip advisor reviews for The Fountainside and decided that based on those reviews we would book a room for 3 nights.
This hotel is excellent value for money. Ok, so the outside might be a bit dated, but retro now is the new black. The original retro styling is back in, so it is kind of funky. The rooms are amazing. Big sized rooms with plenty of space. Nice decor and huge flat screen TVs. Bathroom was modern and clean. Mini bar was awesome and used the bottled water which was priced at supermarket prices.
With my online booking I requested a room with a nice view. Okay, so it is a little bit noisy being on a major roundabout without double glazed windows, but this was the only fault with the hotel. We were given a 5th floor room and the view was beautiful, especially the sunsets.
The meals at the hotel are at bargain prices. Fully cooked buffet breakfast for only $10.80-how good is that! The food is simple, filling and wholesome. You are not going to get anything gourmet, but you will get a good feed. We also availed ourselves of dinner one night at $19.80 each. This included soup, salad and a main meal. again it was a wholesome nicely cooked meal.
The Fountainside is well located within 5 to 10 minutes walk of the city centre and harbour. Special little touches were the bowl of Tasmanian apples at reception which would all disappear by the end of the day. Newspapers are available in the lounge for guests to read. Really like the metal sculpture panel that seperated the dining form the lounge room. Found staff to be friendly and helpful. Overall and excellent place to stay.

Good location (apart from the traffic noise - it is right on a busy roundabout) Central, good value for money and really comfy bed. Main problem was the air conditioning system which despite being set at 18 degrees throughout our 2 night stay, kept the room stuffy and too hot at night. We had it checked by maintenance and he said it was centrally programmed not to be allowed below 18 - which is too hot for me at night and actually felt a lot warmer than that. No opening windows.

So , lovely rooms renovated and great beds, good shower and nice bathroom but let down by non-renovated air con system.

After reading the TA reviews, I booked our stay for the 2 nights we were in Hobart. I'd warned my husband, who has champagne taste and a beer budget, not to be put off by the exterior. The rooms were very nice and modern and, to hubby's delight, came with a big flatscreen tv. We had a kitchenette and used it for breakfast which was great for the little ones. I was also happy to know that the hotel was within walking distance to Constitution Dock and a 5-10 min walk from Salamanca Market.

After reading all the great reviews of this place I booked it with high hopes and was not dissapointed. The reception desk and staff were not overly helpful and the downstairs as well as the outside looked its 3 star rating.
The rooms, on the other hand, felt new, the beds were comfortable and everything was clean. We rented two of the family rooms and they were great, with a corner window used for the table seating. The mini-bar was great too! We didn't bother going out and buying our own water and sodas but instead used theirs since they were the same prices as we would have gotten at the supermarket.
It is walking distance to the harbor/pier and also the Salamanca Market. It is located on the first major round-about when you enter the city of Hobart, making it easy to locate for those who rented cars.

We had a wonderful experience staying at this hotel. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The location is also great with just a short walk from the waterfront. The rooms are well-sized with a nice view of the fountain, the highway and ABC building. Would recommend this hotel to everyone visiting Hobart.

Just came home from Travelling Tasmania for 2 weeks. This was by far the best Hotel we stayed in. The rooms are excellent, beautiful king size beds, plasma tv, spacious, great shower, and very clean. I recommend dining for breakfast and dinner in the restaurant, cheap prices and excellent food. There is nothing too much for the staff, they are very friendly and helpful. We stayed here for two nights then went to Port Arthur, back to Hobart to stay at the Leisure Inn Waterfront Hotel........What a mistake, it was disgusting, could not stay there it was so bad. Went straight back into town to see if there was a spare room at the Fountainside. They were great, said it was a pleasure to have us back and gave us a family room which was fantastic for the same price as a normal room. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and should you be in Hobart you would be hard pressed to find such a fantastic hotel that is so well appointed and close to everything in the city. Great value! Five stars from us!

This Trip Advisor reviewed hotel that we decided to stay at in Hobart really was a gem. Located in the theatre district, two blocks from the waterfront in a very nice quiet area. My wife and I stayed here three nights (Fri, Sat & Sun). Our hotel room was on the first floor, unfortunately no view to speak of, but the room was large and spacious, with a small kitchenette and a very comfortable bed. The mini bar was to die for, really cheap prices on everything, and the traffic noise was minimal, even on the Monday morning, and we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
