This is a bakery, and the food certainly lived up to expectations, consistent with other reviews. The kids did find the pain au chocolat a bit too chocolately (if that can be believed), but the coating of chocolate on the outside at either end should have been a clue that this was going to be a deluxe version. The Crocque Monsieur was excellent, as was the avocado and tomato on sourdough toast.
The coffee was inoffensive, but very weak, so much so that my partner expressed doubt that actually was coffee (it should, however, be noted that the hot chocolates were not weak: a chocolate theme here perhaps?).
If that was all was to say, this review would have been a 5, or perhaps a 4 notched down by weak coffee. But the service was terribly slow. There was a sign saying "Table service, please be seated", and so we walked in to take one of two free tables (it was very busy). Some eye contact was rewarded with a promise that the table would be cleared, but that took some time and it was a further wait to be served. If that was the end of the slow service, I would probably not even have commented on it, but where things really became irritating was when it came time to pay. For those dining in, the way to pay is to take your receipt and queue up at the till, which is where take away service and bakery purchases are also handled. Of the five waiting staff, only one was at the till and she was fulfilling the bakery orders, as people slowly chose cakes and pasties, as well as operating the register. Fifteen minutes of queuing later, and the couple ahead of me were clearly as irritated as I was (making it this hard to pay would surely tempt some to walk out without paying). A simple change to workflow, having someone dedicated to operating the till during busy times would make a huge difference. I politely suggested as much to a woman who emerged from the kitchen to assist in taking take away orders just as I was about to be served. She not seem too impressed, saying "this is how we do it". If I hadn't enjoyed my Crocque Monsieur so much, I would have been tempted to award a score of only 2.
