“Clean and Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2009

I have stayed here numerous times, almost always in either room 50 or 54.

It is clean, comfortable and affordable, and it has history - It was built in the late 1800's. (It is believed that the tower was built for an invalid child, who spent most of their time in the tower, overlooking Hobart).

It is not a very modern motel, and there is no couch or kitchen sink (most motels don't have these, anyway), but it is very comfortable, which makes up for that. It is about a five minute's drive to the CBD, and it has a big car park.

The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Room 8, which is in the inside part of the building, second nearest to reception, is newly renovated, and I stayed there for two nights last week. The heating is not very good, which is not good when it is cold, and the bathroom door doesn't close properly, but otherwise, it is nice and spacious, and suitable for a family of four.

The double bed is in the main part of the room, with two large windows, a TV, a table with chairs and a kitchen area and wardrobe. There is a door separating it from the other bedroom, which has two single beds and one TV.

One time, when we stayed in room 50 or 54 (I think it was 50), there were toenail clippings on the floor, and we had to get a vacuum from reception and vacuum them up. This is the only time it has not been very clean, and the staff were apologetic for it.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about staying here.

Our 2nd stop after Melbourne was at Tower Motel. Located in New Town, North Hobart. 5 minutes drive to the city via the Brooker Hwy, or a 10 minutes drive via Agryle Road. Good location. 5 minutes drive to Elizabeth St., where cafes are open till late night. Big parking.

Nice view. Clean rooms, but the bed was rather saggy / old (no bugs), good thing is fitted with heated matress pad. Overall above avarage, but value for money.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2009

The motel at New Town, a northern suburb close to Hobart CBD, is rated 3 stars with modest cost - we chose a standard room (which is bigger) instead of a budget room. Imagine our surprise when checking into room 9, closest one to reception, we found our motel room had a chandelier! Not only that it was large & had lovely bay windows with nice drapes - there was also lovely plaster work on the very high ceiling. Turns out it was part of the old late 1800s home. There is at least one other room which would be similar. Our review therefore can ONLY BE FOR ROOM 9 as we did not see the rooms in the other wings of the motel which spread off from the old home section. Our room was very clean, we had a comfy bed, big wardrobe which held all our clothes for 5 nights, a renovated bathroom with a large shower. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The motel had a good atmosphere. Going through the back exit of the house-section of the motel to the laundry the hallway carpets were worn and the courtyard outside could do with a lot of work. The rear motel wings, from outside, looked dated but couldn't speak for their interiors. The laundry itself is worn & really could do with a 2nd washing machine & dryer as there are over 60 rooms. From the staff we gathered that they are renovating other rooms too & we were told we had the best room in the motel - we don't disagree with that! There was a dining room but only for coach tours - but we had a nice breakfast delivered to our room, no other meals available. There are great views of Hobart from the tower - built as part of the old home - however the steps are narrow. We found the location perfect, easy access to the CBD of Hobart about 2km away and for tours north, south & east of Hobart. Coming back from the city access was straight along Argyle Street & relatively light on traffic. It is well placed & easily located arriving from Hobart airport even at night. All in all, a modest motel at a good price and in an excellent quiet location with very helpful staff.
