“Surprised by how great it was!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2010

My family and I definitely were not expecting such a nice little hotel on arrival to Coober Pedy. The Underground Motel is a wonderfully presented little motel that is carved into the rock of a small hill. Our room had three beds and one trundle and an ensuite that was tastefully decorated and kept extremely clean. There is a little shared kitchen in the motel for the guests to use that was always stocked up and clean. Being on the side of a hill, the motel has nice views from outside where you can sit at table and chairs and look out over Coober Pedy. The temperature of the rooms is always between 20-25 degrees. The hotel is close enough to town to walk to. There is a truly excellent pizza restaurant there that I highly recommend. If I ever go back to Coober Pedy I would definitely stay at this little gem of a hotel again!

Spotless rooms (each with large ensuite), well equiped spotless shared kitchen, friendly staff and breakfast included. What more could you ask for - that the room be underground, yes you get that too. We were delighted to find this motel and would have stayed longer but it was full, so obviously the word is out.

The Underground Motel offers a unique chance to spend a few nights underground in the weird and wonderful Coober Pedy. Mike, the owner, is on hand to point you in the right direction for things to do and where to eat. He has worked hard to make this motel a comfortable, relaxing and individual place to stay with great views over the barren landscape. It is very well maintained and its cleanliness could not be faulted.
The motel is carved into the hillside and the entrance hallway is particularly impressive. The rooms are attractive with rough excavated walls, comfortable beds and a TV. The ensuite bathroom is small but pretty. The communal kitchen provides all you need for the included breakfast of coffee, tea, toast, cereals etc. - not forgetting the fridge for storing a few stubbies for drinking on the verandah watching the sunset.

Visit the attractions around the town including the underground churches, cemetery, Old Timers Mine, galleries, opal gift shops and the golf course! Take a trip to the Breakaways for great views of the stunning landscape. Although we were warned of 50 degree temperatures in January we managed to experience a rare rainy and cool day, which prevented the tour from venturing too deep into the Breakaway area!

A number of films have used the uniqueness of Coober Pedy and the Breakaways, including ‘Mad Max Beyond The Thunderdrome’ and ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’. Various relics from these and other films are dotted about the place, especially on the hill overlooking the town.

The Underground Motel gets my vote for Coober Pedy.

I am claustrophobic, yet I found the room at this motel spacious, spotless and so comfortable. I was cycling solo and unsupported from Adelaide to Darwin, so I needed somewhere peaceful to relax and recharge for the hot desert climate ahead. The hosts were so friendly and helpful and the views of The Breakaways and the town of Coober Pedy were magnificent. This is a luxury setting yet the room prices are so reasonable.

I drove down from the NT for a few days break and based my selection of the Underground Motel on other Tripadvisor reviews and was not disappointed at all.

The motel is easy to find as Coober Pedy is not that big and is nicely situated on a high spot so the view over the town and landscape is a good way to end the day with a cold drink and start the day with the included breakfast.

The place is very clean and tidy and the room I had had all that I needed for my two day stay. The bed was comfortable, the walls were dust free which I had not expected (thinking that living in a cave would be dusty) the en suite bathroom was very clean and it was nicely decorated.

Mike, the owner can point you in the right direction to see the sights or where are good places to eat, he recommended to me the Chinese restaurant on the first night and the pizza place the second night, both meals were excellent and there is a discount at the pizza place for customers of the motel although I forgot to ask for it. The pizza place also does very good coffee.

The half day tour that was recommended was a good way to get a potted history of the town and an insight into some of the colourful characters that have lived there and some that still live there. You get a chance to fossick for opals and although none of our group found their fortune there is always the chance you might.

The Underground Motel is rightly rated as the #1 hotel in Coober Pedy by Tripadvisor and I would recommend it to any one travelling through Coober Pedy.

Excellent friendly service. Rooms immaculately clean with personal touch undertaken by owners. Effective set up they have. Set on hilltop outside Coober Pedy - can watch the sunrise or sunset whilst having drinks or brekkie. Friendly, well run by Mike and Merci. Recommend totally. Wanted to stay longer.

The on-line reservation was smooth, Mike offered to pick us up at the airport, we sent a reminder e-mail on the morning we were to fly out of Adelaide, but we were still left sitting at the airport until REX staff asked whom we were waiting for and phoned the motel.
Location is more than 1km from "downtown" businesses, but Mike provided a complimentary shuttle for food and grog.
Motel is carved out of rock, so the hallway (and kitchen) is a bit noisy at night because there's no sound absorption.
Rooms have ceiling fans, but quite warm because there is no air-conditioning.
Communal kitchen is immaculate, fridge is kept in order, and the complimentary breakfast of cereal and toast/jam with tea/coffee is quite filling.
However, the most appreciated service was the complimentary shuttle to the Greyhound at 5:30am: we couldn't imagine walking 1km at that time of the morning!
