“A great insight into early opal mining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013

Lots of interesting information and a good experience of what opal mining was like in the early days. The self - guided tour was ideal as it allows you to go at your own pace and concentrate on the aspects that most interest you. Although the mine is absolutely authentic, I felt that the manequins or dummies used in the mine to illustrate various activities were in some cases a bit unnecessary and some were in poor repair. A little maintenance here would improve the experience. Overall though, well worth the visit.

“Everything U need to know about opal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

The self-guided tour tells you about opal mining in the past and present (including a dugout to show you where and how people lived, plus a blower demonstration outside), so that you leave the premises knowledgeable enough on the subject, after allowing a good couple of hours inside, without getting bored for a second. Certainly a place to go to while in Coober Pedy.

“Worth the visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013 via mobile

This was an awesome experience enjoyed walking through the caves learning how hard opal mining is. Staff very friendly. One thing they could do is have a sign to say there blower display is not on for whatever reason as my wife and I waited for it before walking into shop to ask and be told not on.

“Interesting and fascinating”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Old Timers shows life at the start of the mining boom, with a preserved mine that shows the old pick marks and cramped conditions in which people dug for their fortunes. Streaks of opal have been left in the rocks too - missed by the original miners. You then see an underground house followed by the museum itself. Great place to inform you of all the history of this curious place.
