Henley Beach is Adelaide's best family beach for swimming, strolling, beach games, fishing, picnics and dining. In Summer the Square hosts many free activities on weekends, such as yoga and concerts, and occasionally outdoor family movies.
Henley is safe and friendly and a much better choice than Glenelg if you want to relax and/or have children in tow.
There are several excellent restaurants (Estia - one of Adelaide's best Greek restaurants), Stella and Evida, as well as coffee shops, fish and chips and ice-cream. There's also an historic pub, often frequented by Adelaide footballers, for those who are excited by such things!
If you are cycling from the city to the beach, turn north at West Beach (the end of the linear bike path along the river) to head for Henley, rather than South to Glenelg. This also has the added advantage of taking you one stop from Grange Beach and the train to the city if you've had enough of peddling. (You can take your bikes on the train).
Henley is an essential part of any Adelaide tour, Summer or Winter.
