We visited Al Amir using a 'feast' multi-dish daily deal voucher. Al Amir is on the corner of Frome and Rundle and upstairs so there is only a small entrance off the street. Upstairs the room is open and light because of the large windows and corner location. If you face towards Rundle St the view is surprisingly good, as you look across at the previously un-noticed heritage facades which sit above ordinary shopfronts at street level.
The dining room is quite basic and somewhat dated - tile floor, chairs and tables are nothing special, plates, cutlery and presentation fairly simple, some scenic wall murals painted below wall arches a little dubious, but the food is for the most part good to excellent.
The savoury Middle Eastern flavours can be delicious; one or two things were bland and disappointing (whitebait and chips, for example, some of the pastries, and the dessert). The half moon pastry and meats on a stick were really good, succulent and savoury.
Service wasn't too bad, with the staff explaining dishes as they were served up. Sometimes the gap between courses was a little too long.
I will be coming back as I really enjoyed some of the savoury flavours, but will be avoiding the dishes I found bland and sticking to the good ones in future.
