“Poor standard, not a good place to unwind”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 days ago NEW via mobile

We stayed here as we have a week in hamilton island for a conference so we wanted two days somewhere else nearby that is quiet. We were prepared to spend up to around 300 per night but there were no options on Long Island at the time of booking only this hotel for 109 or one for 600. So we weren't expecting much but this place is very poor. The setting is great and the location is great on the water and nice walks in the area. The hotel however was really substandard and felt like some backpacker joint. The food was awful every day. We only stayed two nights. The bar food was very average. Even when ordering just plain cooked prawns they were not fresh and had white stuff all over them, just not presented decently. The salmon was completely overlooked. Even the burgers were below average. One evening we ate at the restaurant with three courses. The fish was so small and not nice. The steak was so tough we only ate half. If one wants to have a drink outside then all drinks and wine is served in plastic glasses which are cloudy and not pleasant to drink from. The rooms are quite bad. The curtains don't go across the full length of the window. The furnishings are old, the paint jobs bad. The bathrooms are newish but all the materials are shabby and rusty already, the ceiling full of mould. One has to keep the windows open as the place does not smell good. The cleaners clean as much as they can but the place needs maintenance. There is nowhere nice to sit outside the rooms despite the great surroundings, everything is shabby. There is no privacy at all. The rooms are not soundproof from next door or above. The buffet breakfast looked bad so we just had coffee at the cafe, but it doesn't open until 8.30am. Even just to get a pool towel one has to pay deposit which is fine but also $5 which is not refundable when you return the towel per person. I don't know why one has to pay to use towel at resort. I was very upset when I realised we could have stayed at the nearby Palm Bay resort on Long Island. It has only reopened fairly recently after changing hands and they have separate bungalows available from 150 per night or 190 beachfront. Their gardens are so nicely manicured, the location is excellent, and the bungalows have nice, private places to sit outside. I don't know why anyone would stay at this hotel versus the Palm Bay resort. It was just unfortunate we didn't know about it at time of booking this one. The location of that other resort is spectacular and although they don't have a restaurant yet they have many delivery options of fresh food and seafood. Overall I would not recommend this hotel to anyone as although it's in great location and Long Island is great for a peaceful break there is not much point if there is nowhere nice or private to relax and unwind, or if the food is no good.

Absolutely loved Breakfree long island resort. Was much better than expected, the staff go over and beyond what was expected. We had booked an early flight the day of departure and unfortunately there are no ferries to transfer us to mainland so Breakfree staff transferred our last night to a hotel on the mainland for no extra charge! Was pleasantly surprised. The Island itself is beautiful and they have done a fantastic job with all the facilities and activities you can do. We loved the daily fish feeding at the pier, was amazing to see these massive fish come to the surface to taste the food. The bar was fantastic, the cocktails were reasonable and the salmon was delicious. The room was lovely, bathrooms renovated and they have very friendly sulphur crested cockatoos. Loved the fact that there are daily services and new towels etc. Highlight of the stay was The watersports guys, privately owned business located right on the beach, which offer Free kayak hire and Free paddle boat hire! could not believe this. My husband and i did a couples deal which included jetski for 1/2 hour, stand up paddle board, tubing and to top it off a very informative turtle tour, which i would recommend to anyone. The owner Dave is very friendly and goes above and beyond to make sure you have a good time. Overall very impressed and would love to come back some day.

The rooms are clean and the housekeeping staff did a great job of cleaning our room daily. It looked to us like our room had been fairly recently renovated as the bathroom looked quite new. Some of the paint in the room was a bit dodgy, like the stuff on the wardrobes but overall the room was pleasant enough. The unfortunate thing was that it only had a very small half circle table to sit at. This came with two dining chairs. It would have been nice to have a sofa or a couple of comfortable chairs to sit at instead of having to sit on the bed when you wanted to watch TV.

The resort overall was pretty shabby. There a quite a few things they could do which are just cosmetic but would make the resort look so much better. The tables near the pool bar need to be sanded off and revarnished or re-oiled. The gas lights that are supposed to light the beach after dark don't work because of some damage to the gas line that hasn't been repaired.

The biggest disappointment was the food. I ordered the full breakfast on the first morning there and everything was cold and looked like it had been sitting in the warmer for at least an hour. Lunch was bought at the pool bar which served a 'pub grub' menu which was prepared in the main kitchen and brought over by staff. That food was not too bad. The evening meals in the dining room were buffet style for the entre and dessert and ale carte for the main. The first two nights we were offered tomato and something soup or the salad bar and then a waiter came and took our order for the main. The main however arrived before we had even finished the soup. The next night we ordered again but waited a bit to order the main. We both had steak and it was very tough and we could only eat about half of it. The next night we ate at the pool bar.

We decided to forgo the 'hot' breakfast in lieu of the continental breakfast the rest of the trip as we could cook our own toast and at least it was hot. However on a couple of occasions I had to ask for things like bowls for the cereal and plates for the toast. The staff working on the breakfast did not seem to grasp the concept of keeping an eye out for things that were running low and replacing them. I asked for muesli two mornings in a row only to be told they didn't have any. I also had to ask for the skim milk to be topped up. The coffee in the urn was cold and the hot water had run out on a couple of mornings and was not replaced.

I understand that it the resorts 'off' season but attention to detail is sorely lacking. This is the first resort my husband has stayed at and he has no desire to go back to the Whitsunday's again. I got this resort as a half price deal and we are really glad we didn't have to pay full price for it. Another couple we met expressed the same opinion.

Dear Fiona B,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback in relation to your recent stay at BreakFree Long Island Resort.

It is disappointing to learn that your expectations were not met on this occasion and that you encountered the issues that you did.

Providing quality customer service with impeccable attention to detail is very important to me and you can be assured that I have passed your comments on to my Head Chef and Restaurant team to ensure the issues you raised do not happen in the future.

Over the last 2 years, BreakFree Long Island Resort has undergone a series of improvements behind the scenes, as well as in the rooms and public areas. Most recently, we have replaced the mattresses in the Beachfront rooms, renovated the public bathrooms and renovated the floors in the reception area. These renovations will continue into the future, with many front and back of house projects already in the pipe works.

Thank you again for your feedback and if you wish to discuss any of the issues you have raised in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at emma.waterman@breakfree.com.au

Kind regards,

Emma Waterman

If you want champagne and caviar then you can pay five times as much and get it at one of the real expensive Whitsunday resorts. We came here because the price was affordable and did not expect too much - but we got all we could have wished for and more. The staff and the local wildlife were genuinely friendly and helpful, despite the odd hiss from the bush curlew. The facilities were great and all working and freely available. You could relax and do as little as you wanted just your outside beachfront unit or you could partake in the many arranged free activities or just stroll on the paths through the adjacent national park forest and absorb nature. When the tide is in the beach is great for swimming, kayaking and other watersports and when the tide was out the resort had two pools and a hot spa available. We had spring low tides and exploring among the brightly coloured exposed coral gardens that stretch across the bay was awesome. When we were there visibility in the water was not good for snorkelling but we still swam with some of the local turtles. Sea temperature was 22 deg C and just warm enough in July for comfortable swimming for people like us from cooler places like NZ.
The buffet breakfasts and dinners were fantastic and good value for money at $20/head for breakfast and $38/head for 3-4 crs dinner.
It was school holiday time and the resort was half full but the kids were all well behaved and happy because there was so much for them to do, including the kids club. We stayed and enjoyed our five night visit, but next door was a couple who were having their annual 2 week holiday there, just as they had done for the past 4 years - speaks volumes for their satisfaction with the place.

Room Tip: Choose beachfront ground floor if you can afford it - right on the beach with all your own wildlife...

This resort has seen better years but it was still a good place for a family holiday. The rooms are basic but the bathroom was newly renovated and all was clean. There was enough to keep us all entertained during our stay. There are limited options for eating other than the restaurant or pool bar so would recommend some self catering for BBQs etc.

Just got back from breakfree long island resort for my birthday holiday with my fiancé. If you want to relax this is the place for you. There's not much transfers from cruise Whitsundays so organise your time wisely if you plan to go out from long island. On my birthday my fiance organise a surprise candlelit dinner by the beach, everything was lovely, thanks to Sarah, Scott, Luke and all the staff, they are all so welcoming. We tried the pub food which is decent and the restaurant food, a bit pricey however it is island so you get island price food. The cocktails and mocktails were good too and decent price. We enjoyed using the spa as the pool and beach is a bit cold for our liking. During night time they had different activities to entertain everybody such as karaoke, bingo, singer and trivia night. The rooms are quite spacious and the bathrooms are modern. We had the beach view room which is fantastic. Keep note that they don't do the housekeeping everyday however you can get your towels changed if you request in the reception. Overall we had a pleasant time and will come back again.

we stayed in one of the 100 rooms (beach front) which is at the quiet end of the resort. Though it wasn't as quiet as we would have liked this was due to the inconsiderate hotel guests, so not the hotels fault. The romantic package with all its inclusions at $1000 a head for 5 days is great value for money! You definately won't go hungry. The staff were outstanding with a particular shout out to the restaurant manager Scott and waitstaff members kaylee and Mat. And the maintenance/porter/tour guide/general island guru whose name has slipped out minds, you cant miss those curls though. There is lots to do on the island, from snorkeling and bush walks to turtle tours. Definitely visit other beaches on the island (at high tide) for a full on island experience.

Thanks to everyone at Long Island Resort, you made our holiday great :)
