We chose Peppers Palm Bay because they had received good reviews from other TripAdvisor customers and we were glad that we had checked out those reviews as one of the days we visited another of the cheaper resorts on the island and appreciated what we were paying the extra for.
Positives:
We had a lovely cabin, nicely decked out, well maintained by the housekeeping staff and with all important air con (for my husband) and heater (for drying our clothes as we were not lucky with the weather!).
The skippers and waiting staff were absolutely great - really friendly and helpful - they made the difference for us. Them and the wildlife. Although the fringing reef looks quite sorry for itself with all the sediment and we didn't have the visibility for snorkelling, we still managed to walk among the wildlife at low tide and see turtles, stingray and flying fish from the canoes. The surrounding dry rainforest also provided us with viewings of wallabies, skinks, sea eagles, curlews and more butterflies than you could shake a stick at!
There was a DVD room and small library with board games - things we made use of when we lacked the sun.
Not-so positives:
The lady on reception treated us like a nuisance at first - we were only going to see her as we had been summoned (she told the waitress send us over to see her, no explanation, we felt like naughty children sent to the headmaster)
We didn't find the food to be as good as many reviewers had said, maybe we were just unlucky?! Choice was limited, which has to be expected on an secluded island but it was also very rich so if your stomach isn't good with that, you should maybe think of an alternative.
The weather was our main problem as it meant our reef and whitehaven beach trip was cancelled (shame as I really don't think we experienced the true essence of the Whitsundays as we didn't get out!) and the pool and jacuzzi were too cold to stay in for longer than a few minutes so we were quite limited in what we could do, still we were only there for a few days.
Summary:
Overall, we were glad we paid a bit more to go here - lovely rooms, canoes and snorkel gear, DVDs, books and board games available and as previously mentioned, the waiting staff are lovely. If you want to relax and do nothing - this is the place. And despite feeling like we missed out on a proper Whitsundays experience, we know that no-one can control the weather.
However, we would advise anyone else going out there to expect to spend quite a bit once there, too. Food we were expecting, and trips out are quite pricey (but would have been worth it!) however, the transfers all add up too! From the airport to Airlie Beach, from mainland harbour/marina to Long Island and then more just to get their little dinghy from the main Long Island jetty to the resort itself because their boat is 'out of the water' - these things you have no choice about as you are hardly going to walk!
