“We really enjoyed Daydream Island but ....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2010

My husband and I plus our girls (ten and fourteen) enjoyed our stay for 5 nights at Daydream, although my hubby was not happy about having to pay $200 for our transfer to and from the island and thought we would find a cheaper deal at the marina, but no deals available.
We arrived in glorious weather, were greeted and offered a complimentary mocktail on arrival and the resort was explained to us (were told the wrong restaurant you have to make a reservation for) while our luggage was unloaded and delivered to our room. Our room was comfortable and clean with two queen beds which I requested (singles are not available) I referred the girls to share a bed instead of a sofa bed. We stayed in a ground floor Garden Room which was opened up on to a small grassed area and then the two very large pools which suited my family perfectly, unpacked and chilled out around the pool. Safe in room a great idea loved it, easy to use.

Food: We took the advice from another review, we had brought a loaf of bread on and cold meat from Airlie Beach for lunches (Bakery on island does sell bread) plus snacks for morning tea and afternoon tea and could enjoy these whenever and where ever we wanted to without bothering with food outlets and cut down on cost, the buffet breakfast was great. Dinner at the tavern 3 nights of our stay was great, you ordered your drinks and meal at the bar and were given a pager to let you know when your meal was ready no problems although I have had better pizzas but I did not have to cook etc. But Mermaids the other 2 nights the service was slow and you had to make a reservation (same staff that was at the tavern, they rotate restaurants, the tavern is closed on nights Mermaids is open) a la carte and not enough staff more chefs needed in the kitchen on these nights, the managers walking around occasionally could have helped out if they cared, our ten year old got upset at waiting so long on the first night as we did not make a reservation due to wrong info on arrival, but second night we did but still slow service) the other restaurant available is take away style during the week and on weekend is open as a buffet we were booked to leave on a Saturday. Meals and drinks can be expensive, prices available on Daydream website. we took two bottles of wine in our luggage and enjoyed sitting outside our room and enjoying these with dip and crackers.

Activities: We also took our own snorkel gear to save cost of hire (tip from another review) and went to Lovers Cove a bit hard to find signposting could be better. Water quality was poor but we still saw lots of fish up close near the waters edge and enjoyed our morning tea while there, beautiful. Pools were great, the gym was near our room it was full in the mornings but later in the day empty my hubby and daughter enjoyed it then. Putt Putt great well designed and reasonably priced. Free Living Reef talk great and very informative, bingo $5 for about 5 game was great but rules are not explained very well sometimes especially for kids, you can win a free go at an activity or at the spa up to $40 or lagoon or splashes bar tab for $50. Movies under the stars was great experience but be warned people put their backpack, towels, jumpers on the seating to save a seat go to tea early then get your seat. Movies are held in a conference room if rainy. Water polo every day, rain forest walk, bocce, volley ball, table tennis, aqua aerobics. lots to do. Not told if kayaks and catamarans are charged we did not see them used.
We decided to do a tour (3 islands $430 for family) we booked at activities desk very helpful but seemed to be limited in types of tours available all different companies seemed to do the same thing. Where given snorkeling gear and stinger suits, lunch, morning/afternoon tea. Took along our snorkel masks came in handy when dropped at Whitehaven Beach for an hour and an half we saw more fish and coral around the rocks as the water quantity was better there than Hook Is.

Overall we enjoyed a great very relaxing holiday the staff are very friendly and do their best to be helpful. We had partly overcast days, a little rain, but could still do lots or as little as wanted. Not a lot of people on the island possible to have an area all to yourselves.

We had only 1 night at Daydream Island in April, mainly just to check it out for ourselves & to decide whether it's worth staying longer, as we had read so many negative reviews.
We arrived in the morning from Hamilton Island (which we had just spent an amazing week) & were impressed by the great service we received at Daydream. The staff were all extremely friendly & made it all so easy once arriving off the ferry.
We had lunch at Mermaids Restaurant while waiting on our room & we enjoyed the meal & the great ocean view it has.
Our room was perfect, we stayed in the Daydreamer suite which overlooks Lovers Cove. It was clean & spacious with a spa bath. The kids stayed on the sofa bed & a portable bed which was set up for us prior to arriving.
The pools were great, we didn't get time to use all the facilities, but had a good look around & thought it quite well set out & there are plenty of activities to do, jet skis, kayaks etc.
We spent the evening in the Lagoon bar having a few drinks & a light dinner from the cafe, listened to the band, generally just chilled out.
A buffet breakfast was included, which was very good, had everything you'd want.
The highlight for our 2 children was the living reef. This is amazing, it is a man made living reef surrounding the resort. They have sting rays, sharks & all kinds of fish, it really is wonderful, they also do fish feeding throughout the day & talk about all the species within the living reef.
Overall we will definately go back to Daydream Island & stay for 3 or 4 nights & experience all the resort has to offer.
My advice is to keep an open mind about the resort, it does need a makeover, it is a resort so you will pay more, but if you get past that I think it's a nice family friendly destination for a short break.
Thank you to all the staff you were great!

We went to day dream Island over the Christmas 2009 break which is a nice way to celebrate a well deserved hoilday. We had a great room which was located at the far end near the beach and was very quite.

The massive swimming pool was lovely and we meet some really nice people who were also enjoying a nice relaxing holiday. The pool is spotless always. The new years Eve festival was really amazing even though it was $120 a ticket per person. This included lots of food including seafood and endless beer, wine and soft drink. So it was worth it.

Upsides- really relaxing
Downsides- Rooms were in need of an up grade a little bit old and tired
Downside- Food in Mermaids is over priced and not that nice
Upside- The fish Bowl tavern had great food for everyone and was well priced.

The outdoor movie theatre was really great. Not really that many activities for the kids. More or less they find there own fun really.

Great holiday if you can affford it. It gets quite expensive as you pay your bill at the end but thats what holidays are all about to spend money, have a good time and enjoy.

We stayed on DayDream expecting 4* service and accommodation, it is not. We were there the week before Easter, and the hotel was practically empty!!
The rooms are good (I think we had an upgraded one - interconnecting) for our family of 5, but the public areas (corridors, lobby, external buildings) are all in need of a refurbishment/lick of paint. The floors/carpets are dirty and torn, there was a smashed glass balcony, which didn't get repaired (we were there 6 days) and numerous maintenance works which needed completing.
The overall ambience, pool areas and views are beautiful, and I can't fault them at all. the living reef is good for the kids and enjoyable to watch each time you pass, but is nothing compared to the real reef!
We found the staff to be friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately, and this is the biggest drawback, the food is shocking, and please bear in mind that you are marooned on an island in the evenings, with no-where to go but the resturants. They are not all open, they select one resturant each evening, and you HAVE to eat there. The choice and quality is very poor, akin to a 2 * restort. I was considering going to Lindeman island, but decided not to because I don't like a "scrum-down" which generally takes place at feeding times in an all-inclusive resort, but it was EXACTLY the same on DayDream and you had to pay extra for this. Service at the resturants is shocking, very slow and not attentive (bear in mind your paying top dollar for this) you cannot take your business elsewhere and you are trapped. My family and I went on the barrier reep trip, and came back, by the time we had a shower/changed we were starving so went to the ONLY resturant which was opened, (7pm) to be told sorry you can't have a table until 8:30pm!!! OMG, that is unbelieve I have 3 children under 10 and they were starving (oh yes, and btw..... the hotel was EMPTY)!!! I complained and the manager provided me with TakeOut (Sandwichs, pizza and chips), hardly 4* service!!
To be honest my recommendation would be to visit DayDream and enjoy the pools/facilities, but only stay and day and go back to somewhere where you can get a good meal.

I had previously submitted a positive review of this resort, but now have been left with an extremely sour taste in my mouth due to the front office management. They have charged without consent or prior knowledge a couple of hundred dollars extra. When checking in they asked for a credit card imprint but wereassured no money would be charged if we settled our bill before departure. Therefore used our own credit card imprint on 2 rooms (only 1 of which was ours), we were told by check in that if we settled our bill before departure it would be fine. DON'T BELIEVE THEM THEY ARE LIARS. We now have money charged we weren't aware of and Daydream Island refuse to provide itemisation so we can check it (numerous errors were made on our original bill we settled on departure) or split the bill with the other party. Front office staff said something would be sent by post but this money was charged 3 weeks ago so really don't hold any hope on receiving anything from these staff members who just don't care. I did ask for it by email - just too hard for these guys and their customers just not worth it to them. No apology forthcoming - just a sour puss attitude like you get from their reception desk at the actual resort. These guys just don't want to be here.

Otherwise - the room was fine but basic, the breakfasts good, evening meals expensive and average. The best thing about this resort is the Activities staff, both front counter and those that run the activities. These guys are awesome!

But we definitely won't be back due to the front office management.

Our daughter recently got married on Daydream Island, the wedding co-ordinator was friendly but hard to contact (unless you like speaking to an answering machine) We suggest you ask for the mobile number if you plan to book a wedding there, and write down everything, including the name of the person every time you contact them ... we wish we did!

We were a group of 26 adults and 6 children. Our accomodation (which was booked months in advance) was badly managed - room bookings were lost, boat transfers were mixed up and wrong information was given to guests regarding parking. The bride and groom were promised an upgraded room, and then told at the last minute it wasn't available.

On arrival, check in was 2 hours later than promised and 10 people's bags went to the wrong rooms. We suggest you mark your baggage very clearly with your name.

There were long queues at mealtimes and the resort seemed to be badly understaffed in alot of areas (they told us "it's easter and lots of staff wanted time off"!!) Not good enough. The food in the buffet was plentiful, but basic for a 4 star resort. They ran out of bread at breakfast time and ice cream at dinner time!! And there's ONE self serve cappucino machine for 600 guests! There are a number of restaurants on the island, but not all were open over Easter which we were amazed at. We asked and were told this was normal practice.

We had a garden balcony room, (photo attached) it was large, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Our king sized bed was comfortable and again very clean, but the shower was very BASIC, ours was not much more than a dribble of water, and other guests in our group said the same. Quite a few of us said their towels smelled of smoke!!

We asked for 2 single beds in my mum's room but didn't get it. The spa in her room didn't work and didn't get repaired during our 4 day stay. Her room was very musty smelling. My sister didn't get the room she'd booked and was told nothing else was available to suit her family of 4.

For the wedding, we naturally had to pay for everything in advance, but on check-out we were handed a bill for an extra $3000!! When we said we'd paid in advance, they didn't believe us and asked to see our receipt!!

On the positive side, the actual wedding went off without a hitch. The island is very pretty, the pools are gorgeous and the grounds are excellently maintained, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly - there just isn't enough of them. Friends who stayed last year (not at easter time) said it was the same then, seriously understaffed.

Overall it wasn't a four star experience for us, there were way too many stuff ups (more than I have mentioned here!) The staff were wonderful, and they made a valiant effort but the management and the administration infrastructure is sadly lacking.

Think twice about this island unless you like being inconvenienced, there are better run islands in the Whitsunday's for the same price.

Day Dream Island is ok at best. If you are a westener looking for a luxury resort this really isnt for you. There is nothing particuilarly wrong with the island. But it isnt that special either. Unluckily for us the weather was poor so we were forced indoors. Maybe if the weather was better I would have have a better impression.

The food in Mermaids restaurant was excellent and I liked the outdoor cinema.

Overall the island as a whole relt a bit like Butlins....not what a young couple would be looking for,

Also, If you do decide to book, book a room with a view....it does make all the diference.
