“Great food but ... the experience could have been a lot better!”
We took the Saturday night 'Fast Cat' from Hervey Bay to the Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island for the seafood buffet. The evening started poorly when the boat operator showed up 3/4 hr after we were told to be at the head of the dock. People waiting on the dock were contemplating leaving, because no one was showing up. As a result we got a super fast trip to the resort just to get there at the time the buffet started. Didn't quite make it, but within 10 minutes. Standing around on a dock with nowhere to sit for 45 minutes was not a great start to the evening.
When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a mediocre rock band playing so loud that no matter where you were in the restaurant, conversation was impossible. Certainly not the type of music or level of volume one would expect during the dinner hour. Ok for later but not then. Not good! Other than a couple of short breaks, the band played continuously during the evening. The volume started loud but soon progressed to painful and we had to move outside the restaurant for our coffee. The band ruined the night for us. It would have been fine if they had started at 9:30 after dining was winding down, and played for people who might want to dance, but to play at that volume from 6:45 when we arrived (and likely earlier) during the time people were eating and might have wanted to converse, was poor judgement on someone's part.
After being seated, we waited a few minutes for a waiter to show so we could order a bottle of wine but none came. Had to stand in a long queue at the bar and then handed a bucket full of ice with the unopened bottle of wine in it. While waiting a couple of customers were complaining that their $15 drink was not made correctly as they had watched it being made. For me. it was a little awkward, carrying this pail of ice & wine through a packed restaurant. Once back at the table and after several minutes, the lady clearing the table noticed the pail on the table, and got us a stand for the pail.
As always the 'all you can eat' buffet was excellent with great selection of hot and cold seafood. They really do know how to do seafood. This is why we have been so many times over the past few years. If we were rating the food only, we would have given 5 stars.
So all in all, the overall experience was less than enjoyable, what with the wine, the ear bashing from the rock band (playing within metres of diners) and the standing around the dock in Hervey Bay for 45 minutes. Management needs to address these issues or this time is the last time, for us.
