I did a day trip to Fitzroy Island as I wanted something different, less expensive and/or 'touristy' than other reef and rainforest experiences out of Cairns. The crew on the Fast Cat were very kind and held the ferry for me as I was running late having been caught out by the price rise in parking since my visit last year (boo hiss Cairns Council - wish you would put in credit card facilities on your parking machines!). I found the staff in the general store, dive shop and turtle rehab centre all very friendly and helpful also.
The snorkelling is great considering it is straight off the beach. The staff are helpful in directing you to the best snorkelling locations. The coral isn't as colourful or the fish as prolific as on the outer reef but there is a good variety of marine life and if you love to be independent and organise your day for yourself, this is the perfect place. There are lockers available which is handy for storing snorkelling gear if you want to take a walk through the rainforest.
The walk to Nudeys beach is picturesque and it is a pretty beach that you can snorkel straight off. Just be aware that the beaches on Fitzroy are largely coral so not that comfortable to lie or walk on. All in all a good day trip with plenty to do. Booking direct with Fitzroy Island means you don't have to pay for included lunch, you can just bring your own which is much cheaper and more flexible. If you can't be bothered, you can always eat and drink at Foxys which isn't cheap but has fab views. You can also select the inclusions you want like glass bottom boat or snorkelling gear.
As an island day trip for the independent traveller, it beats Green Island hands down in every aspect.
