“Great location for a relaxing holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

Have just spent three days at the resort (two nights) and have enjoyed it immensely. There are a few small complaints of things that could be improved but overall it has been lovely. We had a one bedroom ocean suite. These are ocean facing, with balconies and views. I would not recommend the studios which appear to have only one window and this faces the back wall if you are lucky! So pay the money and get the suite. The rooms are musty smelling, a fact commented on by many others in the reviews here and I am not sure if there really is anything that can be done on this. It is thetropics after all and the rainforest is at the back door. But I had read about it so wasn't surprised by it. The furnishings are attractive and in good condition. We had two towels, one hand towel and a bathmat but no face washers. Was very surprised by that and thought the supply was a bit mingy. Would have been nice to be able to wash my face.... This would be easy to fix.

While we were there we did the lighthouse and summit walks. They are steep but worthwhile and water is essential. We also snorkelled, one of us went for a dive and we made good use of the pool. The reef was lovely with a good range of coral, turtles and many many fish.

The eating options are limited with just the restaurant at the resort for dinner and the cafe/bar for lunch and dinner. We ate at the restaurant one night and really enjoyed the food. Foxy's was the choice for the other dinner. The 300gm TBone steak was a big disappointment. This and small and no where near the 300gm as advertised on the menu. Why say that then serve something much smaller. Other meals were ok. I would be bored with the eating options though if we had stayed more than two nights as eating in the restaurant very night would be too expensive.

The swimming pool has a bar but this is only open from 12 to 4. It advertises drinks with descriptions that say 'perfect to watch the sunset'. Sure, if the sunset is at 3pm, that would work! The pool bar is one area where the resort needs to work much harder. Often only one staff member making the drinks and given they are cocktails they take a fair amount of time to make. I had a 30 minute wait for my drink. Lucky I only wanted one. The bar area is also left dirty when the staff leave until they come back to open it the next day. Yuk. Half full glasses sitting on the bar in the pool at 9.00am are not appealing.

The staff were friendly and helpful. They just need to employ a few more of them.

Overall we had a very enjoyable and relaxing few days and would love to come back.

Room Tip: Don't try to save money. Spend the dollars and get a suite.

First of all: if you love a holiday at your own pace, this is the place.
On this Island you can freely go swimming. kayaking and walking around, there is plenty to see botn under water and in the forest, and just an handful of people around, silent and dark nights, no cars or motorbikes, just a few boats.

The coral reef is great, just go off the beaten track -the best spot is located between "bird's rock" and Little Fitzroy Island, North-East of the jetty- and proceed along the edge of the reef, say 100 meters from the coast. I dived the Moore Reef, Green Island, the Red Sea and Martinique, and I found Fitzroy Island rather satisfactory: sea turtles, blue-spotted stingrays, giant groupers, squids, a shark (a small Gray Reef Shark, no cause for concern), lobsters, parrot fish, giant clams, starfish, plenty of soft- and hard- coral, colorful sponges, big -20 cm- top snails, etc.

By the way, stinger suits are in order, especially to protect from sunburns: the resort rent them at 10 AUD per day.

The resort itself is good: we had a beachfront Ocean view suite with a very well equipped kitchen, a large fridge. big LCD TV and stylish furniture; the resort has a small but nice cinema -great for keeping kids entertained- a fairly large pool, and a diving center; the breakfast is varied and abundant.

Now for the caveats:
1) When you enter the room the smell of mold is strong, but goes away quickly.
2) The room is stylish, but not apt for the tropical climate: too much textile, no mosquito nets, weak ceiling fans.
3) The kitchen is very well equipped, but the offering at the resort's shop is poor, it gets replenished - I inferred- weekly or so. Therefore cooking in said kitchen is a bit tricky for want of supply (you would be better off bringing groceries from Cairns).
4) Sofa's mattress is a torture instrument: if you plan to sleep someone there, get an additional mattress from the reception right away (the provide one to use quickly).
5) Room service is less than average: we had to ask for towels a couple times and sometimes they forgot to do the beds.
6) We asked twice to fix the -very noisy- fridge, but they did not, and failed to apologize for the inconvenience or tell us why it had not been fixed.
7) No Internet and patchy mobile coverage -Optus and Vodafone, no Telstra- guess which carrier I had :(

In short: with a better management this could have been a perfect vacation... but nevertheless we are very happy with the time spent there.

Room Tip: Room 106 has a very noisy fridge -and they won't fix it.

I visited the island in last Easter with my family. We paid for a two package that includes two night stay, glass-bottom boat trip, fish feeding, rain forest walk and so on. It was a bit pricey 970 dollars but as the fees includes the facilities it seems reasonable.

However, the trip was totally disappointing. The weather in Cairns is changeable and it rain a lot when we were there. So we were told that the boat trip is canceled due to the weather.

And the food on the island is also on the expensive side and the selection is narrow. ( for a proper dinner it costs around 30 -50 per person and the food is just average).

So what we could do on the island was just walk in the rain forest (you can only walk for 30 mins as it rains every hour..). There is no guard in the walking track and there is no guard at the beach.

The boat trip to the island was not very comfortable. My dad's face turned green after the 2 hour ride. And we all get wet.

The good things are you may go scuba diving for free and there are plenty of fish there (just 5 m offshore). The fish feeding was spectacular.

Considering you can also stay in Cairns it is not worth it to stay in Fitzory Island. The rooms are smelly as it is so humid there and your cloths never gets dry. When the weather is bad there are nothing to do in the island. Yes, you can watch a movie in their cinema but do you really want to spend your time on the island watching movies?

The beach is covered by millions of dead coral so diving can be quiet painful as your feet constantly get scratched by the sharp dead bodies.

It is a lot more sensible to stay in Cairns and plan your trip according to the weather conditions and so on.

I took my wife and youngest son to Fitzroy this last week to get away from the rat race for a while. I was a little dubious about the weather in Cairns this time of year but I needn't have, it was excellent. The Island is only 40 minutes by ferry for Cairns. The resort is tucked away in the tree line from the jetty. What an amazing place it is! The check in was a little delayed but very smooth. The rooms were luxurious and clean. The views were delightful. The staff describe themselves as a family and that is how they work. Very happy, helpful and efficient. One comment about service. The "shop" rarely had any stock such as milk and bread which was unfortunate and the menus at both restaurants were very predictable. A little variation would be greatly be appreciated if you are staying over a week. The snorkeling is easy, close and extremely enjoyable. My wife is a very nervous swimmer but loved the snorkeling here. The pool is wonderful. I recommend this island resort to families and couples. A great gem in a great place.

Room Tip: Second floor. One bedroom rooms with ocean views. Outstanding. Quiet.

My family and I spent 2 nights on Fitzroy with another family. Our accommodation was excellent, great view and the beach was about 15 metres away. There are so many things to do on the island for Adults and kids. Even though we DID have a fantastic holiday I have to say that the staff need to be more organised and a LOT happier, most of them didn't want to be there and were no help at all. I do have to praise Ben at Reception though, he was fantastic, we asked for a late checkout and he gave us 2 hours complimentary, 5 minutes later our friends asked for a late check out and the other reception person (I am not going to mention his name), said "no" - what was that about?? The food is also very ordinary - but the pool area and great snorkelling make up for all of that. The Resort does need to make some changes. The pool bar is only open from 12 - 4pm, the last ferry doesn't leave until 5pm and what about all the people staying on the island. The best time to be at the bar and pool for overnight guests is after 5pm when everyone else has left. Overall we did have a great family holiday, with just a few complaints which could be looked into. Valeria

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a room which overlooks the ocean, not the rock wall or the old cabins that are...
