It's cheap, but that doesn't excuse the basic lack of attention to the health and safety of guests. The kitchen was by far the worst backpackers kitchen we have seen in seven months of travel across SE Asia, NZ and Australia. First impressions are of cleanliness and space, but birds (and a chicken?!) fly and wander freely in ... pigeons roam the work-surfaces and nobody appears to do their washing up (despite the fact that crockery and pans are kept under lock and key, supposedly loaned under deposit from reception). While we were there it was quickly apparent that the only kettle in the kitchen was cracked and leaking badly (i.e. by the time the full kettle reached the boil it was only half full). In my mind this was a seriously dangerous problem (notwithstanding the very real scalding risk, water and electricity are not a good combo), so I took the kettle to reception and pointed it out. The receptionist dismissed my concern/complaint and said it had been like that for ages and promptly returned it for continued service to the kitchen. Half of the sinks in the kitchen were without taps and their was nothing provided to ignite the gas hobs with. We had planned to "eat-in" but after ten minutes of being in the kitchen I gave up trying to prepare a meal in there, it was too ill-equipped and dirty. They also wanted to charge us 50c a piece for a pack of disposable plates and cutlery because they had none to loan us!
There are big signs upon entry into the swimming pool sayng "no glass or bottles" which is a very sensible precaution, but on the day we were there absolutely everybody in there was drinking from a stubby or a wine glass ... there was no supervision of the area and therefore highly likely that there could be glass in the pool.
Cleaning staff were surly and down-right rude. I was made to feel most uncomfortable by the cleaner who was cleaning the toilets at 7:30 in the morning (!) as if a shower at that time of day was most irregular! (there were no alternative facilities provided or advised during that period so I couldn't quite see why I was the villain.
Finally, you don't see the sign advising that if you are planning to check-out earlier that 9:00 you need to get your key deposit the night before until reception have shut their door for the evening and its too late. The cynic in me thinks that this may be a deliberate ploy - what would be wrong with the receptionist advising us of this on check-in? We had to "hang around" and wait for reception to open because i was most certainly not going to let this place have another $20 of my money.
Just don't go there.
