“Hotel is nice, city is unventful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2011

Traveled there in October with my father for a conference and the hotel was nice. The surroundings were clean and well maintained and the room was impeccably clean. I found the room to be much smaller than accustomed to in N-America (we had a 2 queen type room) and the view was giving to the city part, which was under MAJOR construction/renovation. They jack-hammering all day long and pedestrian paths were all blocked during my stay. The area in which the hotel is located was safe and a short walk 98-10 mins) across the pedestrian only bridge took us to the city's "main street" where all the restaurants are located on. The food at the hotel itself was very good, especially their buffet style breakfast. LOTS of choices and quite tasty. *** One thing to note about this hotel and Australia in general: They do not have free wi-fi there. You hve to either pay by the hour, the day or go to the cheaper options, internet cafes.***

The rooms have been renovated and are very modern and comfortable.
Excellent location in the heart of Townsville. Pity they were working on the Mall reconstruction down the street all night though.
Dinner menu in the Shiraz restaurant somewhat limited in variety.

Everything inside is lovely. Staff were very friendly, the English porter especially, sorry I cant remember his name. I agree the entrance and valet carparking are appalling. Quite dangeous at night (female on their own). Was relieved when the porter offered to walk me out to the car. The outside is what lets this place down, rooftop pool and balconies off rooms all need renovation and maintenance checks - felt very uneasy having the kids take a look outside. We too had wind whistling through gaps in sliding door all night.

Finding the actual entrance to the Holiday Inn was the first issue. We went down many streets before actually finding the correct one. You would think someone might have mentioned it when booking the room. Very confusing about where to put your car for the valet service. We check in and proceeded to our room. The room we were given was just a normal room, however I had booked a 1 bedroom suite, as we had 2 children with us. This was not the room the lady had described to me on the phone. I rang reception and we were moved to the correct room. After we moved our luggage to the 2nd room, we pulled out the double sofa bed, where the kids would be sleeping. The sofa bed was broken (we couldn't even pull it out properly) There was no sheets, pillows or anything. Rang reception and we were moved to yet another room. We started off with 4 towels, then after cleaning was done the next day, we only had 3 towels. Couldn't be bothered ringing anymore, so we just used the hand towels. And there is not enough space to hang 4 towels(only enough for 2). The fridge was extremely small, could hardly fit anything else in there. Some staff couldn't apologise more, others lacked basic manners. I had 1 cup that had not been cleaned properly in the kitchen. Overall, I definately will not be staying here with children again.

Summary:
Townsville Holiday Inn is in the centre of town. It has good rooms, some with spectacular views. Staff are very welcoming and helpful. The restaurant and bar are pleasant. Priority Club status is recognised.

Arriving at Townsville Holiday Inn:
Check-in was quick and friendly. My Priority Club status (Platinum) was recognised.

Townsville Holiday Inn itself:
An older hotel that has been recently renovated. The location and facilities are good. The rooftop pool is worth a visit for the views alone.

Rooms:
The recently renovated rooms are quite spacious and some have great views. I was given a room on a higher floor. There was nothing wrong with the room but in the very windy weather, the balcony door did not seal quite properly and was making loud whistling noises like a kettle. A change to another room solved the whistles but even so the windows rattled quite badly. Finally the weather settled down and the next day and night were fine. The hotel is quite tall and exposed but you can get great views! It seems some maintenance is needed on window and door seals.

Meals:
I had drinks and dinner in the bar/restaurant on the 1st floor. It was nothing very fancy but was very pleasant with reasonable prices and nice service.

Leaving Townsville Holiday Inn:
No problems. Check-out was quick and efficient. There is a taxi rank close to the hotel.

Stayed here for two nights in December 2010 on business. The rooms appear to have been recently renovated and are very comfortable, the restaurant was quite good for dinner although there is not a large selection on the menu to choose from. My only real criticism is the valet parking costs extra per night and we waited half an hour one morning for someone to collect our car.
There is a great deal of construction work going on in the mall around the hotel at the moment but from my room on level 13 it couldn't be heard.

We had a very good time at the Holiday Inn. Our rooms had very new furniture including modern TV set etc. The hotel is nicely located so you get everywhere quickly. There is still some construction work on Flinders street which we could hear in the morning, but that should be completed in future. We did not try the breakfast, hebce we cannot comment on that.
