Not only do we hold management responsible but the Worltourism website who offered this appalling accommodation to us and have been less than co-operative in refunding monies owing. Like the 2 reviews of Jan.'07 and Oct.'06 we had an unsafe and unhygienic experience with our 3 teenage children during our stay at Top of the Mark. It was difficult to find the reception and carpark entry firstly, then our 18 year old son approached reception and was able to book us in, showing no ID and payment of the balance due was not requested (thank goodness) as detailed on the booking and confirmation form. A notice in the foyer told us the lifts were still under repair, due for completion 10 days before our arrival, as our children were on another floor this posed a problem as the stairs too were unsafe. We presented an 82 item list of our main concerns to management on leaving the property after a reluctant 1 night stay, these included filthy furnishings and crockery, broken glass left in storage cupboard, cigarette burns in bed covers, insufficient blankets, a used toothbrush left in bathroom, handles broken on drawers and cupboards, human hair left in bathroom basin, broken power switches, eqipment from lift repairers left on balcony, shelving coming away from the walls, a single pane of glass placed upon a TV stand as a coffee table, fans broken, smoke detector broken and the cord filthy with cobwebs, dust and grime, miscellaneous contents in the cupboards with sharp edges and dirty that were obviously not meant for guest usage.
When we approached the manager the next morning his first response was "We don't stay in the rooms so we don't know what they are like." We also stated our disapointment that it was a 4 star rated accommodation on the Worltourism website that we booked through and again the response was less than apologetic -"The star rating was done a long time ago and only applies to our executive suites." This is not good business practice and we didn't actually receive an apology for the state of the rooms or the lack of notification regarding the inconvenience of the lift repairs during our stay. This is the 1st time we booked accommodation over the internet and we have learnt from this experience, it is OK to get a preview from the internet but DO NOT book through Worldtourism as the amount paid to the actual accomodation and what Worldtourism take is quite confusing as we have discovered after contacting Worldtourism in order to get a refund from them as advised by the surly wife of management at Top of the Mark on leaving. Top of the Mark management told us on leaving that they would only charge us for the night we stayed and any further refunds would have to be sought from Worltourism, the manager then wrote on a scrap of paper the calculations and told me he would deduct the remainder from my credit card balance, this was not done; and we are getting the "run around" from Worltourism and Top of the Mark on this issue alone. We are experienced travellers and have never been so disgusted with any accommodation and disconcerted and disillusioned with contact with the management of such places as we were with Top of the Mark. They didn't seem to care less that the accommodation was not only generally dirty it was not of the standard (4 star-ha ha ha!) advertised and they had 5 angry customers, they should be made accountable. We will never recomend either Top of the Mark or Worltourism and will continue to pusue or consumer rights until we are refunded our
hard earned holiday money and receive an apology for the deception!
