To say we were disappointed is an understatement. It was such a waste of our money staying at Mantra Crown Towers. And kicked ourselves for not reading Trip Advisor about this place. I truly hope this review helps save some people wasting their money on what they think will be a ‘lovely treat’ to stay somewhere nice on holidays - especially with young kids.
Mantra Crown Towers Resort on the Gold Coast is highly NOT RECOMMENDED (unless you get the room that is pictured on the website). I second all the negative feedback given for this place and can assure that all negative comments given by others are accurate. It is such a pity for us to not have read Trip Advisor prior to booking. We sadly fell under the spell of the Mantra CTR website showing ‘bright, lovely modern looking rooms’, great kids pirate themed pool area…and the 'honest face' of Pat Rafter. The room pictures you see on the website is NOT representing the quality that you may actually get – this is pot luck which obviously some customers have been lucky to get. So please be warned as that there is a significant difference…see my photos and compare with theirs, then judge for yourself. Why it is classed as 4 – 4.5 stars is beyond belief.
The first apartment that we were allocated was a horrible green painted apartment that was drabby, with mould on the air con vents (it was black and furry and looked like mould), very dirty looking, discoloured and stained couch and carpet, chipped kitchen bench (in alot of places), with views of the street carparks, and views of the dirt land (being made into carparks). To top it all off, there was the musky smell of dust and damp in the rooms. So we complained. This was not what we paid for, and was not what was advertised. So we asked for another room…which we did get. But this is after being told the excuse that these apartments were individually owned therefore it was not their fault…the impression we also got from reception was that they were so used to receiving these complaints so it was an automated response from them.
Individually owned or not, there still needs to be standards that must be met to wear the 4-4.5 star badge – for ALL rooms!! Not just in the reburbished rooms. We truly felt second class being given the room we got.
So, was the second room better than the first one? Well, there was an improvement in the couch (it was all one colour and was actually decent looking!!), and we got views of the beach on one side, and the river on the other (that is only if you look past the smoke/dirt/food stains splattered on the mould lined kitchen blinds). Not much else was an improvement.
This is what we got for $330 per night (in the second room):
-Stained carpet spots and large patches in ALL rooms - most likely vomit stains (it was certainly in the splattered shape of it…) and looked like it was bleached out – see the photos.
-Smoke/dirt/food stains splattered on the mould lined kitchen roller blind
-Outdated cane furniture - one dining chair more obvious than others had furry mould on the arms and edging of chair
-One large area on the (what looks like rendered/plastered) ceiling of the kids room had furry mould (the damp kind)
-Built up dust/dirt (it was black, whatever it was, and looked like mould) on the air con vents (but geez, lucky for us – sarcasm dripping - it wasn’t as bad as the first room)
-Dirty and stinky dishwasher with broken dial
-Poor state washing machine and fridge
-Entry door had no lock so had to request one put in (credit to the maintenance guy for doing it within 10 minutes like he said he would)
-Taped over drainage hole in bathroom (not sure why but my guess is it was probably loose, or too mouldy and disgusting to show???)
-Old style CRT TV (didn’t think these still existed)…especially in this supposedly reputable 4.5 star accommodation (no digital, so parents - cross out Channel 22 while trying to make dinner, and get ready for the mind promoting Spongebob Show and Kung Fu Panda - heyy-ya kapow!!!)
-Broken remote controls (sticky taped together)
-Outdated décor (unless you love the 1980s 1990s cane furniture décor and bed and window furnishings)
-Plastic and dirty outdoor furniture setting (seriously…for 4.5 star accommodation??)
-Horrible green painted walls (as un-modern as you can get) – Mantra – get your ‘owners’ up to standards and hire an interior consultant for goodness sake!
Or here’s another idea, show the pictures of the rooms we stayed in and don’t give your customers a nasty disappointment.
…People…think ‘freeway motel’ furnishing meets ‘backbackers hostel’ cleanliness and you get the picture….that’s 4-4.5 Stars for you at the Mantra (an embarrassment to all the other true 4-4.5 star accommodation).
So please re-think about staying here if you want class. And if you still choose to try your luck – maybe bring some anti-bacterial wipes just in case you need to clean off the mould.
I wonder if Pat Rafter would be happy staying in the apartments we did…(this of course would NEVER be exposed to him!!)…sigh…
(Dear Hotel Manager...please don't bother replying and giving more excuses...I can't imagine how you could make our poor experience (and others who have been given the same) any better. My photos paints the picture).
Choose another 4.5 star accommodation somewhere else - and be guaranteed that you get what you expec...
