Surfers Paradise still has its magnificent beaches, night markets by the beach, life savers, meter maids and its other great attractions and isn't this what most people visit Surfers for?
What it doesn't have at the moment is a vibrant shopping strip and free moving roads and that's a pity but it is indeed the price of progress. The Gold Coast, centred on Surfers and K's either side on the Gold Coast Highway is a very large construction site preparing for the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in 2014 and the Commonwealth games in 2018.
Construction of a lite-rail system is causing havoc with the roads and it can be rather a challenge getting around, particularly at night. Businesses along the route are also being impacted with many closing.
An unreported gem for eating out along the Coast are the numerous 'clubs' ( RSLs, Surf Life Saving, footie and other sports, etc). You can get some really good meals at very good prices. Some also provide breakfast menus that compare very favourably with other venues.
