“Not too bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

This is a it of a party hostel, but not so much that we weren't able to get some sleep when we wanted. The location is so-so. It's right near the beach, but is a 2.5 mile walk to downtown Surfer's Paradise. As the name says, it's in Main Beach, so it's a bit of a hike if you want to head to get some groceries.

The guests don't really follow the policy of cleaning your dishes as you use them- so the kitchen can get pretty gross throughout the day. They could also use another refrigerator considering the amount of guests that they have at any given time.

The staff was super helpful and were always on par with the information they gave. They even gave us suggestions on where to look for apartments!

When the YHA's own website says 'not recommended for families' it's a bit of a giveaway that the hostel is going to be full of young party people, and your chances of a decent night's sleep are going to be pretty slim. I thought I would take a chance anyway, and in the end I'm glad that I did. I was staying on a Saturday night, and by six or seven inn the evening, it was looking decidedly messy. There were at least three full blown parties going on in dorm rooms all around me. The layout of the hostel is such that all rooms have large double glass windows, and a door leading out onto an elevated deck. There is zero sound proofing. Thankfully the noise died out before nine, presumably as these young pups headed out to the clubs of Surfers Paradise. And I must have been fast asleep by the time they came back in, as I didnt hear anything until several hair driers went off around eight in the morning (seriously.) Other than that I loved the location, just over the road from the beach, and right by a marina. You can walk along the beach all the way to Surfers Paradise, probably an hour's stroll all in all, and a delight! The Fishermans Wharf Tavern is right next door, which is one of the best pubs in the area, and there are a handful of other cafes and restaurants close by. The strangest thing about the hostel has to be that the bathrooms are accessed through the kitchen and lounge area!

Room Tip: Choose a private room... avoid the noise.

Our room is along the common corridor and has glass on 2 sides which makes poor soundproofing. We could hear people walking by and were unlucky enough to have a group of drunks talking loudly at the tables right outside our door. This went on well until 1.30am. As the reception was closed, we didn't know where to direct our complains to. Strangely, one of the drunks even managed to open our door in the midst of the mayhem which left me feeling insecure. The door, by the way, couldn't be open from the outside without a key when it's shut. It left me wondering if they could have somehow got a key.

The staff here were friendly and helpful though. :)

This was a stop-over in my australian trip, after Sydney and Blue Mountains. It was just one night, and given that I was travelling solo, Surfers Paradise is not quite an optimal destination.
Given this and decided to do some sightseeing, I set out to walk from the hostel to Surfers' Downtown twice, one during the night and other the following day. It's a long walk, about 2 miles. However, being in Australia I had never felt so safe walking alone at night.
So, about the hostel: very clean, six-bed room, friendly staff (with just one exception: the check-out girl after I missed check-out time by mistake), and, as in most hostels, friendly guests.
If you want to beat australian prices and sacrifice location, then this hostel is for you

Nice hostel and great location. Staff were helpful and friendly.
We startedhear before we drove to brisbane.
W were in a 6 beded mixed dom.
Kitchen was large and there were tables so people could eat there foot or sit and chat. Tv room was small and very close to the kitchen. Needs a wall to separated the two area.
The toilets and showers are near the shower and kitchen which is not the bast. As people can see who comes and goes.
No life to the rooms so needs to get case up about 20 stairs not good when you've drove and just want to get to your room.
THe hotel offer a free bus into town. We used this to get into town and walked back. Th ewalk back was about 20 minutes. We walked along the beach way and it was nice to see people enjoying the days with the families.
I did not expect the town to have high buildings which did not bother be. Reminded me of new york the building.
computers for inernet use and phone if u have a yha orange card. (what can be used for interet or phone)

Stayed here four nights in. Four bed female dorm. This hostel was about 30 minute walk from the city however the hostel offers a free shuttle bus several times a day into the city which I great. There is. Beach five minutes over the road which is pretty quiet so great. They also let you borrow body boards, balls and other things for the beach which is a added bonus.

The hostel had a great atmosphere, laid back and friendly, the balcony overlooks the marina which has amazing views. The kitchen always clean. The pizza night was great value for money and a good way to meet people in the hostel.
The toilets and showers were through the dining area however I didn't mind this as he hostel was fairly quiet.
The rooms were small and there was no air con which for the first night was so hot however once you get used to the heat the the fan they provide it's good.

This has been one of the best hostels I have stayed in. Thanks guys!!

Ok, the room was clean, but it had just a tiny window and so it was very dark during the day in the room.

You had to pass the common area with tv and kitchen to go to the showers which I found a bit strange. (especially when you come out of the shower in front of the whole hostel.)

Most of the staff was nice and helpful, but the girl at reception admitted that she doesn't like living in Surfers. And I think she doesn't like her workplace either cause when I had to take the Shuttle bus 2 hours prior to my Greyhound bus, she said: "Well, it's better to hang around at the beach than at this place."

The hostelbus doens't run very often, which was very annoying. They told me that they don't want to pay someone just to run the bus.

You have to pay for internet (like in all Yha's I think), but there is a McDonalds with free WIFI just nextdoors.

The kitchen was clean and there were enough plates, etc.
