I stayed here 2 nights to visit friends I used to work with so it was a quick break away from work. I booked a standard King room through Hotel Club. I checked in on Sun morn at 11.00 and a room was ready, room 2008, overlooking the beach, an older unrenovated room, but spotless in presentation, it had a good sized bathroom and looked like it was recently retiled, this being a former Courtyard by Marriott, the sink and refreshment area were outside the bathroom.
There was no minibar in the room, but could be supplied on request, I prefer this to paying for over priced mini bar items, this is made easy on the pocket as the hotel sits on top of the Surfers Paradise Centro Shopping centre, so you have a woolworths supermarket and a BWS (beer, wine & spirits) Store around the corner from the lobby.
The Room and floor was non smoking, I could smell cigarette smoke in the afternoon and stepped out on the balcony to see people in the room next door smoking on the balcony, so beware, the breeze will blow smoke into your room at times, it's not going to be the hotels fault.
On the sun night I decided to have dinner in the room, I do not usually eat in the hotels I stay in apart from breakfast. The Room Service Menu was very good with a lot of Variety, taken from the Restaurant and bar menus. I ordered a Sirloin Steak with a side Garden Salad, on taking the order the waiter was ready to hang up and I asked how long would the order take, the response was ohhh about 40 minutes, at 55 minutes I called again and was told it would be there soon and I said I was quoted 40 minutes for med-rare sirloin and it was now 55 mins, the meal arrived a few minutes later, it was a delicious piece of steak and I would have it again, but the room service delivery needs a hot box to keep the food at optimum temperature until service, it was ok to eat but not piping hot and really had to be eaten as soon as it was put on the table without hestitation, on the mon night I had the same steak in the lobby bar as the Restaurant on level one was closed, the food took an appropriate time to arrive but I noticed to food arrived on a trolley, so the kitchen is upstairs on level one, logistics could improve temperature quality.
My real gripe is with phone contact with Room Service, they take ages to answer the phone. It took a long time to get through to make my order, as well as check on the order. The tray had a card requesting to leave the tray outside the door and call Room Service to advise. I did but it wasn't answered, so I called reception and the receptionist offered to transfer me and I just asked if she could pass on the message as the call went unanswered.
On the last day I left the "Do Not Disturb" sign out instead of turning it over for "Please Clean My Room" I returned to the room just after 3pm with a note left under the door advising that a full service could not be provided after 4pm, being my own fault I called housekeeping letting them know my error and just asked if I could just have fresh towels, Angie from housekeeping was there very quickley with a full stack of fresh linen, more than needed and also asked if she could remove the old ones. The one thing I have come to love and trust of the Grand Chancellor Hotels is their Housekeeping standards, if the rooms are updated in decor or not they are immacculate and I've stayed several times at the Brisbane Hotel as well as Auckland and Wellington and as 99% of my bookings are made through Hotel Club, when I see a good deal for a Grand Chancellor, I feel safe in making the booking.
I will come back here, the staff are lovely, very friendly and the hotel is right in the middle of Surfers, once all of the rooms are apdated this will easily be one of the most stunning and affordable places to stay in Surfers
