We stayed at the hotel for four nights during the Australian School Holidays, which is always a busy time in the Gold Coast. We were a group of 2 adults and 2 teenagers.
We arrived on a Wednesday night flight and stepped into the hotel lobby at about 9:30pm. The lobby is very welcoming. It is a very open space and the colours are nice. The water features add to the sense of calm within the hotel, and the Gold Coast as a whole. It was also extremely clean, and throughout our stay, we saw the lobby being thoroughly cleaned at least once or twice throughout the day, and spot cleaning in-between.
The receptionist was very helpful and friendly. Because we are Priority Club Platinum Members, we had recieved an upgrade to a Superior Room. Although all the rooms are much the same in decor, a superior room is on a higher level than a Standard room. We had been assigned a room that faced North, which is the less interesting side, and the side that we had stayed on while at the hotel on other occasions. We asked her if there were any rooms facing South, and she was able to get us a room without trouble. (If you want the better view, make sure that the last two numbers in your room number make an even number, eg. 1614, 1516 etc.)
The rooms are quite big, and most have two double beds. All rooms have a small balcony, and a TV with some cable channels. The bathroom amenities are pretty good as well. The beds were a little hard however, but they were still bearable. There is a complimentary in-room safe, which is probably large enough to hold a notebook computer if you want. A complimentary morning newspaper is delivered to your room if you wish.
There are two parking options at the hotel, self-park and valet. Self-Park is free, and you can park your car in the Piazza Shopping complex which adjoins the hotel. Valet parking is $10 a day.
A concierge is available, and they can book tickets for attractions, help with your bags, park the car or give you information on what to see and do. They are very knowledgable.
We went to the hotel's restaurant, Sirocco for dinner. The hotel provided a 20% discount coupon with every morning paper, so we used it. The buffet dinner is a seafood buffet, and costs $49 for adults and $2/yr for children up to 14yrs. Prawns and oysters are plentiful, but a little bit small. The hot food selection is quite nice, but is nothing special. The dessert is pretty good. Only go if you get the 20% discount, otherwise it is not worth it.
The hotel has 24hr room service as well. You can get a special "Take Inn" room service, where you don't have to pay a tray charge or gratuity. Take Inn menu items include burgers, pizza, chips etc.
There is a business centre in the hotel, but it is at a charge
(I'm not sure how much). There is also an inroom internet connection, which also comes at a charge.
The hotel has a brilliant spa and pool complex, but with the beautiful Gold Coast beaches just 100m away, we never got around to going there!
Cavill Avenue is just 300m from the hotel. Cavill Avenue is the centre of the tourist district, and there are lots of restaurants and attractions to see. The themeparks are far from the Surfers Paradise area, but hiring a car, taking a taxi or riding the bus is quite easy. The Casino is a 15minute drive away.
If you want to dine away from the hotel, I suggest dining at Cavill Avenue, or at the Circle on Cavill apartment complex. Circle on Cavill has many upscale eateries, which are quite reasonably priced, and have lunch specials.
Housekeeping was quite good at the hotel. If we needed extra shampoo or anything, housekeeping was able to deliver it right away.
Additional requests were also catered to very quickly, generally within 10 minutes. The hotel has a pillow menu, from which you can order various types of pillows to suit you. They also provided a shaving kit on request, and some bandaids when we were injured.
We paid just over $150 Australian Dollars a night for the hotel, which I think is extremely good value considering the service and location. The Holiday Inn is one of only two hotels within walking distance of the Cavill Avenue area, the other being the Courtyard Marriott. I think the Holiday Inn is better because it has just been renovated, and the service is much better.
Thank-you for taking the time to read my review. I have attached some photos, sorry about the quality though, they were taken with a phone camera.
