“Spotlessly clean.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

Le Cher Du Monde is a block of self-catering apartments on the corner of Grant and Macrossan, and is convenient for shopping, eating, entertainment and pubs. We stayed in apartment 17, overlooking the street. It comprised a good sized room divided into a bedroom area with a king bed; a spa bathroom; a living room with a bed settee, two rattan armchairs and a dining table with 4 matching chairs. A small kitchen corner off the living room has a fridge, microwave, and a small hob. Everything was spotlessly clean and in good condition. The balcony also had a table and chairs and room to dry washing on the airer provided.
The bed and pillows were comfortable and we slept well. The TV had sufficient sports channels for my husband. We used the swimming pool, but didn't try the barbecue area. We also used the parking area on the night we had a hire car. We didn't use the laundry, which was available on the ground floor.
The advertised wifi is rather slow - but our room was on the top floor, so rooms nearer the router may enjoy faster speeds. Ask Gordon for advice on the best wifi deal!
The owners, Gordon and Rae, have good local knowledge and can advise on trips. We used that advice in advance and booked our cruise to the Barrier Reef through them, months before we arrived. As we came for the Solar Eclipse, we booked the accommodation one year in advance! Their notes around the property encourage thought for other guests. We enjoyed our stay here and would come again.

Room Tip: We had no problem with street noise, but others may prefer quieter rooms at the back.

My husband and I spent 4 days in November, 2012, for the Total Solar Eclipse in Port Douglas. From the first greeting of welcome by the very friendly managers, we knew we had found a special place. The apartment was spacious, the kitchen was well equipped, bed and pillows comfortable, and the shower rated a 10. Each room has a patio, table and chairs, and drying rack for laundry. Compared to the remote location of other hotels, this hotel is located right in the midst of town, close to the beaches, marina, restaurants, and market. No need for a car or bus.

Room Tip: Don't be dismayed by the reception window on the street, when you arrive. The entrance hall ope...

Exquisite well kept building. Very clean and well appointed suites - the bathroom was enormous. The managers are very friendly and accommodating - they allowed me to start using my room well before 2pm and the room they recommended to me on the same level as the pool turned out to be better than the one I had originally asked for. I would go back there again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the back if you want to block out the noise of Macrossan Street.

Comfortable apartment in the heart of Port Douglas. The apartmant is quite big, has cooking facilities, a little balcony. There's a swimming pool in the garden, where you can even have barbeque.
Close to the beach, the marina, the shop, restaurants and bars. The lady was very nice, she has helped us choosing our trips around Port Douglas.
We had a lovely time in here.

Le Cher du Monde is a comfortable, homely establishment bang in the middle of Port Douglas. Its advantage is that it is close to everything you could want - beach, marina,
restaurants, bars, shops, supermarket - and even two ice cream parlours! We hired a car as we wanted to explore further afield, namely the Daintree Rainforest, so the underground parking was a definite advantage.

We arrived out of hours but were still welcomed by the owner. There was a problem with the air conditioning in our room but we were quickly moved to another unit without question. The couple who run the place are friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble.

The room itself is spacious and comfortable and everything was absolutely spotless. The kitchenette is small but we weren't there for cooking huge roast dinners. It is perfectly adequate. We only had time for a quick dip in the pool the evening before we left but found it ideal - not Olympic- sized but very attractive and big enough for cooling down after a busy day sight-seeing.

Our room was at the back near the pool so noise was not a problem - but I can't say we found Port Douglas to be a wild riotous place - it was quite sedate. The only noise we encountered was from the parrokeets (?) in the trees at sunset!

If you have a problem with stairs ask for a room on the ground floor as there is no lift, but help was more than forthcoming with our cases.

If you want out and out luxury with masses of facilities Le Cher du Monde will not be for you, but if you want a good value, immaculate, comfortable home from home with personal service it is just the place.

Room Tip: A room at the back overlooking the pool would probably be quieter. Ask for ground floor if mobility...

We chose Le cher Du Monde because it was in a central location, one of the cheapest accommodation options in Port Douglas, had cooking facilities, and it had a wheelchair unit (very few places in P.D. cater for wheelchairs).

For the most part we were impressed - the apartment was lovely, the pool area was beautiful, it only took a minute or two to walk to the supermarket, the lovely couple who run the complex were very friendly and happy to help us (when invariably we always needed assistance out of office hours).

I was worried there would be street noise being so close to Macrossan Street but we didn't once hear a single car or loud voice. (Our room overlooked the pool rather than the street.)

We won't be likely to stay again though because although the apartment was reasonably wheelchair accessible, the complex itself wasn't, and my paraplegic husband found the resulting loss of independence very frustrating. The front entrance to the complex has steps so people in wheelchairs have to use the back entrance which is up a hill. Consequently it's very hard for someone in a wheelchair to journey to the main street and back unassisted. My husband had planned to take our daughter for spins down the road on his lap while I was busy elsewhere, but he had to lean so far forward in his chair to force himself up the hill he would have crushed her, so his holiday didn't pan out quite as he planned. There is an allocated disabled car park which is great as you don't have to worry about missing out on a park - however again it's not actually wheelchair friendly as it's hard against a ramp so there isn't a flat surface next to the car for a wheelchair. (Plus you have to go up the steep ramp to get to the complex.) The BBQ is also not accessible for wheelchairs as it's up steps. The apartment itself has an enormous disabled bathroom but the bedroom is tiny - if you had a particularly wide wheelchair you would need to keep the bathroom door permanently open or the chair wouldn't fit next to the bed. Le Cher Du Monde advertises itself as having ensuites with spas and king size beds - neither of these apply to the wheelchair unit (the bathroom has a shower only and the bed is queen size or else a wheelchair wouldn't get past it at all since the bedroom is so tiny).

Overall, if someone is travelling WITHOUT a wheelchair I couldn't recommend Le Cher Du Monde more highly. But if you are travelling with a wheelchair I would rate it as "okay" if you can't find anything more suitable in your budget, but not great. My ratings reflect someone travelling with a wheelchair, otherwise I would have rated service/value/sleep quality/cleanliness/location/rooms all as excellent.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the pool rather than the street - they're lovely and quiet.

The hotel is everything that has already been said, Don't get too excited by the reviews and think that it is a grand hotel. It is an older style building with average furnishings. But the location is perfect - halfway along the main street of Port Douglas and it has everything you need, in terms of cooking facilities and a larger older style apartment. I would definately book a room facing the pool, preferably ground or first level. If you are situated facing the street, it is incredibly noisy during the evening, especially late in the evening as there is a pub virtually next door and the back packers play havov until the early hours of the morning.

Room Tip: Facing the pool and no higher than the first level - otherwise too noisy and stairs a chore any high...
