“No place like home...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2007

Arrived in Port Douglas and it was full..! We tried everywhere but being their high season availability was nil. Then we tried the Central Plaza and luckily came up trumps. A cancellation earlier that day and we were in. And what fantastic luck that turned out to be. A beautifully presented 2-bed appt with ALL the facilities you could possibly need to look after ourselves (2 adults and 2 young children) in style and even entertain others if required. A balcony overlooking the good-sized pool and well-maintained and clean BBQ area. We found that we were 5 mins from the main beach and a 10 mins walk into the heart of town on Macrossan Street, as well as great access to the Great Barrier Reef. We stayed for 4 nights then had to go to Cairns. When we got to Cairns we were so disappointed that we turned the car around and went straight back to Central Plaza for another 2 nights... fortunately our room hadn't been let out and it was just like coming home. Thanks to all the staff for making our stay so pleasant and really look forward to getting the chance to go back.

A great stay. Well equipped and furnished rooms. Very comfortable with plenty of room for a family of 4 (we had a 2 bedroom apartment). Easy walk to beach and restaurants in town. Very friendly staff who went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Lovely pool and able to hire prams etc (if needed). Quiet and definately worth the dollars.

After reading many reviews on Trip Advisor and researching properties on the internet we made our decision to stay at Central Plaza and it exceeded our expectations. It has approx. 28 units so is not overcrowded. Only a short stroll to the main shopping area and a Brumby's bakery five minutes walk.

We were travelling with another family and had requested two bedroom quiet apartments away from the pool (thinking there would be lots of noise from the pool). When we arrived our family had been shifted to a first floor apartment with large covered balcony overlooking the pool which turned out to be a great bonus. The only problem was that the air conditioning in the living area broke down shortly prior to us arriving and was awaiting parts. To compensate for the room change and air conditiong problem the hosts - Iain and Fiona had put a very nice bottle of wine in the fridge for us. The lack or air conditioning wasn't a problem - we just kept the overhead fans running during the day. Our apartment had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, washing machine, dryer, full size fridge/freezer, dishwasher, convection/microwave oven, TV, etc. As well as the usual crockery/cutlery they even provided plastic plates and glasses to use when down poolside. They also provided four large both towells per bathroom as well as handtowells and face cloths.

We saw many other resort pools while out walking around Port Douglas and none of them were anywhere near as big as the pool at Central Plaza (apart from the Sheraton pool which is massive). The sitting area around the pool had many sun lounge chairs, large tables to dine poolside if you chose to do so and unbrellas for shade. When we chose not to sit around the pool we were able to sit on our balcony while the teens were swimming. The table on the balcony was large enough to accommodate two families to dine.

Iain and Fiona had taken over within the two months prior to our arrival and are excellent hosts. They are very friendly and helpful. We planned to snorkel/dive on the reef and mentioned this to them. They made some suggestions as to which company to go with but left the final decision up to us. They even checked regularly on the weather forecasts to ensure we had the best possible day to go. Eventually after a waiting and watching for ten days they booked us and picked a perfect day.

We had a wonderful holiday and have recommended this place to other people. We would definately stay again.

  • Liked — Huge pool and spacious well appointed pool area.
  • Disliked — Nothing. If you are elderly/disabled there is no lift.

I arrived at CP on March 1st - the weather was beautiful - the welcome at the front desk by the outgoing management (Kay) and incoming managers (Iain and Fiona) was very friendly. I stayed in Rm5 on this visit. It's a ground floor one bedroom unit with two bathrooms, a full kitchen and in room laundry facilities. The A/C was on and it was nice and cool in the room. One thing that I forgot to mention in an earlier posting is the attention to detail shown by the property managers = There was a full pitcher of ice cold water just waiting in the fridge!
The condition of my room during this visit was the same as last - CLEAN! There's some cleaning supplies in the laundry closet if you need them. The kitchen is stocked with all needed utensils and place settings for four.
I booked this stay through wotif.com.au and got a rate of $115 per night for a one bedroom - and I feel that the property and it's location are far worth the rate! Many people stay further south down Davidson / Port Douglas Road and they're the ones complaining about the length of the walk into PD - and they paid more for their stay!
The weather during my entire stay was beautiful - it was around 33c with high humidity - humidity you'd expect to find in a tropical area of the planet. Plus, the sun is extra strong in this region of the world so when you come to PD wear a hat or carry an umbrella and put on some sunscreen!
CP is located roughly 2 1/2 blocks from everything in PD - to the east is Four Mile Beach. The stinger net is in use right now - so ensure you swim in this area, otherwise you may find a little blue jellyfish attached to your body.
To the north of CP is the town of PD - great shops and restaurants. I would suggest shopping at Coles for your grocery needs. The other closest grocery store is an IGA at the south end of PD near the James Cook Highway. It only takes about 5 minutes to walk to the restaurants from CP - a short stroll after having a few too many... Paddy's is a great little restaurant - Guinness on tap and a great menu - the fish and chips lunch special was tasty and very filling.
To the west of CP is the Marina Mirage - there's a small shopping mall/centre and the marina is where all of the reef tours depart from.
All of your holiday tours and such can be booked with Fiona or Iain at the front desk.
Thanks for another outstanding holiday in PD!

Stayed at Central Plaza for 7 nights in November 2006. Apartment was very clean and spacious - two bathrooms (even though there were only two of us) with all the amenities you could want for a week - dishwasher, fridge, cable tv etc.

The pool was nice and big and staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about what tours to go on and what days to do them on.
We booked the accommodation directly through the Central Plaza website (145 AUD per night) and got seven nights for the price of six. We were happy that we got value for money.

The complex is a short five minute walk to the centre of Port Douglas but far enough away to avoid any excessive noise.

Stayed here for 4 nights in January as part of a several week trip around Australia. The apartment was spacious, well equipped and good value. The location is good, a short walk from the beach and about a 5 - 6 minute walk to the main shopping street.

The managers John and Kay were very helpful and knowledgeable in arranging trips and activities during our stay.

Overall the accommodation was excellent and this is definitely one of the best places we stayed during our trip.

The reviewer below (Dec 10) pretty much said everything. We spent four nights here towards the end of November at the start of our holiday. I'd read the reviews and enjoyed their website, so was expecting a little bit of fun. But for £65 a night this was a mini palace. The apartment was spacious and very clean with all ammenities you could want. If you're a couple, you'll find yourselves with two restrooms, which is always handy ;-)

We never sampled the pool area, but this looked great for families on a longer break wanting to relax before or after a days activity.

We got a great price because the season was coming to a close (before the Xmas break anyway), but I know we'll return to this brilliant beautiful part of Queensland at some point, and the Central Plaza will be our accomodation of choice. Well done Central Plaza!
