My partner and I were supposed to be travelling to Fiji in December, however due to the cyclone, our flights were cancelled. On a whim we booked Port Douglas at the Flight Centre in Sydney and then flew out that evening! This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Granted there are things like the Grand Canyon & Niagara Falls (which yes - I have seen) in the world, however, this place is understated beauty at it's best. Whilst we stayed for a week, and to be fair, there isn't much to do, but that's the beauty of it! The locals are friendly and laid back, the harbour is well maintained, and the look out point is gorgeous. Great access to Cairns (not a huge fan) as well as the Daintree Rainforest (hire a car, don't bother going on one of the tours, much more flexible & cheaper, plus you can go and find the little known watering holes to swim in - ask @ the pub). We actually went in stinger season, and although we didn't go into the sea swimming, we still went to the beach and the harbour which were beautiful. We also were able to go on a diving trip (speak to Scuba Dave at the end of the main street). with stinger suits on so no problems there.
Overall, I fell totally in love with the place!!
Definitely a beautiful place to enjoy!
